If you could only have one

Interesting how many replies so far have been for guns that are not suited to concealed carry.
Glock 23 - my EDC
If I were subject to restrictions that only allowed me one firearm, CC would be the last thing on my mind. However, I see the validity of your statement, as well.

don’t have any clue as to what I might do with it, I grab a Savage 24 in 22/20ga.

I have a couple of those. One is rimfire and 410 (cant remember if it LR or Mag) and one is 222/20guage. I still want a 12/223. Definately a decent choice if you live more in the country like many of us do. More focus on hunting and food with defensive capability as well.

If you lived in a city it would be a pretty terrible choice.

There is not much crime here . I know it might get worse as food runs out . Then I would have no need to go to town . I want a gun that will feed me . With a shotgun and a extra slug barrel I could harvest most any game .

I don't think drilling down to one gun, even a long gun, means one is just thinking about being out on their own and needing protection. For me, concealed carry is a moot point. Really, any handgun is. If i am supposed to stay home and do nothing, then I will most likely rely on a heavy yet reliable long arm. It is better for defense and better if one were to NEED to use it for hunting. And not to go to far into the verboten fantasy realm, but if I got the point where traveling was allowed again but society was still a bit uneasy, I think I would still rather have the 12 gauge handy over a pistol if forced to choose one.

Something that can perform far and near; protect against big stuff and harvest big stuff (and little stuff in a pinch). Something common and easy to feed during scarce times - an AK or an AR. I carried an M-16 for a living a long time ago - I do not want to do that again.

Flintlock smoothbore. Good for small game and fowl with shot, good for at least deer (my most used smoothie would drop a moose) with ball. In a pinch you can make your own powder, recycle recovered balls with a small ladle and mold, and the crick beds are full of primers.
Not something I’d want to go to war with, but a solid gun for survival.

Not that I think this current situation will deteriorate to the point of needing to pick just one gun... But, for fun, if I had to keep just one, it would be my AR. I've got thousands of rounds of ammo for it, reloading components for thousands more, it's accurate, high capacity, reliable, can take down any game in my part of the world, is obviously a solid defensive weapon, and being in the military for 20 years now including trips to Iraq and Afghanistan, I'm extremely comfortable with the platform.

I understand your argument for a flintlock, but why a smooth bore as opposed to a rifled barrel? Wouldn't you want the best accuracy available if you only had one gun for survival? Just curious.

Can’t do much wing shooting with a rifle. And if you are hunting small game # 5 shot is a better choice than a .50 or .54 caliber ball. I have shot better scores on woodswalks with my fusil than I did on the same course the day before with my rifle. And I have beaten rifle shooters shooting my smoothbore. Within the practical range of a round ball and black powder smoothbores are capable of a lot more accuracy than they are given credit for. That’s why I have four of them.

Probably a handgun; most definitely something that also has a .22 conversion to go with it. A Colt Government .45, a Colt Commander in .38 Super (with a 9mm. conversion assembly too), or else one of my CZs with a Kadet .22 conversion would all work quite nicely.

One of the factors in my choosing the 22 is the weight of the ammunition. I think in a survival situation a person may have to be mobile and I don’t think I can carry 500 rounds of 223 or 9mm in my backpack along with other essentials. Obviously it isn’t likely we will ever be limited to one gun I was just curious as to what you all would choose. Let’s hope it never comes down to a situation like this but let’s be ready if it does. Be well my friends.

In a SHTF scenario and I could only pick one, I think I’d go with my Beretta CX-4 Storm in 9mm. Small enough to carry fairly easily, with acceptable performance at longer than pistol ranges. Ammo would be easily available (especially now with all the “panic buying” by people who have no idea how to ha dale a weapon).

in a real situation where things had deteriorated that badly, I’d be using my “one” weapon to fight my way to more.

Well, I am one that would definitely not leave home and head into someone else’s territory unless there was no choice. Also, I would assume at that point that I would be afoot and there might be people out there that want to take what others might have. I wouldn’t want anyone to be able to look at me and think “He has a gun.”

I would carry my S&W 63 8-shot .22LR.
I would have several boxes of ammo. Probably a couple boxes of CCI Stinger or CCI Velocitor or both. A box of Aguila Super Colibri quieter ammo and maybe a box or two of the Aguila Super Extra.

If concealment wasn’t an issue, my Ruger PC Carbine

I get it. Difference of living in a rural area/ the country versus not.
I lived on 20 wooded acres a long time, bowkilled couple dozen deer and shot another with Delta Elite 10mm all inside 20 yards; I don't live there anymore.
Thus my choice for a gun that is easily concealed.

I'm sure with the mass panic going on in the world lately some of you have thought about weapons for survival. If you could only have one gun what would you choose? Myself I came to the conclusion long ago it would be a quality bolt action 22 LR rifle with good iron sights should the scope fail. I can stock/carry a lot of ammo for this great caliber as well as defend and feed my family. Just curious what you folks would choose to carry. I wish you all good health and God bless our country.

A fun question. My first response would have been an FN Five-Seven which is a pistol that can handle 30 round magazines and shoot 200 yards effectively. (essentially a pocket AR). In the end I suppose I would go with my generic AR in 5.56 and/or .223. As far as your choice goes why not keep the scope on without removing the iron sites and then if the scope goes bad just ditch it? You know, I NEVER thought we would come to a survival mode but the way things are going these days makes you wonder.
