Illinois - The Deadbeat State
The are two very bad bills in the Illinois House: HB2414 (AWB) and HB 4693 (Firearm Retailer Licencing).

HB 2414 is an AWB that so far has 7 admendments pending.

HB 4693 would effectively end retail firearm sales in Illinois.

How can you help, you ask ???

Call some of the legislators below and tell them that you will NOT go the Grand American nor any other event at World Shooting & Recreation Complex in Sparta.

The State Rep for Sparta is Dan Reitz (D): [email protected], He'd love to hear about all the tourism money that WILL NOT be spent in his district.

Here's the Mayor of Sparta's E-mail, send him one also: [email protected]

These are the sponsor's of these bills, Call or e-mail them and tell them that you won't be coming to visit Illinois and the WS&RC in Sparta, because you don't feel welcomed by Illinois Anti-Gun/Anti-Gun Owner attitude.

i hate to be a pessimist but Illinois is pretty much beyond help. the people have elected these idiots time and again and now Illinois residents are reaping the rewards of their decisions. there will come a point where the residents are fed up with having their freedoms taken away slowly but surely but apparently that time has not come yet. i'm truly sorry for the members of this board that live in NY, IL, CA, DC. the key is going to be get some rational people elected to office. otherwise it will be only an eternal battle to keep whats left of your rights. as long as Dick Daley and Blahblahblahvich are in office Illinois will continue down the road of Stalin.

boy 2414 makes me mad:

(3) 50 caliber rifles have been associated with

2 violent criminals;
3 (4) 50 caliber rifles and ammunition are proliferating

5 (5) despite the attractiveness of 50 caliber rifles to

If this became law I would have hundreds or thousands of dollars in guns and magazines to get rid of in 90 days or be a felon. Way to go illinois.

I see the 50 cal myth is still perpetuating itself. Barrett ought to sue the news producer that did that article. It was manufactured to make the 50 cal look way more evil than it is. Too bad that today's politicians aren't intelligent enough to seperate the wheat from the chaff.:fire:

Thanks for the heads up Scout. I am new to the sport of shooting and am absolutely amazed at how close to extinction this activity is here in Illinois. The more I learn, the more disgusted I become at the foolishness of these proposed laws and restrictions. I am no fan of politics but one does not need to look further to find examples of their "favorite" politicians ability to reason than their stance on the 2nd ammendment. So many of these anti-gun proposals are so illogical I am left to more deeply question the ability of these representative to "think through" other issues and the effect their decisions will have on our lives.

Capitol Commentary

by Todd Vandermyde

February 4, 2006

This week at the Capitol saw the battle for your rights heat up once again.

HB-2414, the semi-auto gun ban continues to take center stage. Last week amendment #6 was withdrawn by the sponsor. After weeks of talk in the press about Mayor Daley wanting to bring the Olympics to Chicago, they finally realized that their bill, if signed into law, would prohibit Olympic pistol competitors from holding their events in Illinois. So the Chicago Olympics would have to hold at least some of the shooting events in Indiana or Wisconsin.

It appears that amendment # 7 will be an attempt to “fix” this little problem with the bill. While some may say it is insignificant, it points to the fact that: 1) we are winning and 2) they continue to have problems, as they have from day one.

You will note that we are not putting out a great deal of specifics to the bill. Over the past year, the City has been grasping at straws to try and pass something. They, for once, have been listening to the criticism against their bill and changing it to take away those arguments. The Olympic amendment is the latest example of that. We are not in the business of educating them about their bills. If anything, the latest problem underscores that we have been right all along. Why else would they be changing language to “protect” Olympic shooters? Or changing the language on .50 cals to assure deer hunters that their guns will not be banned? The reason is simple, we are right. And we have been right all along.

I would suggest to everyone, that while it may feel good to post all kinds of technical info and point out every little flaw in the bill on blogs or web pages, the message now is simple – NO to a gun ban. No to Chicago style gun control.

Illinois’ firearms manufacturers have told us that should any form of HB-2414 pass, they will be leaving the state, taking with them over $300 million in manufacturing. Jobs, taxes and other revenue will be lost. So once again, our boy wonder Governor’s plan for Illinois economic recovery is to export more Illinois jobs, more business and more opportunities. That is a message that you can reinforce when you call your state representatives about this bill.

The big question is when will this come up for a vote? Don’t know. We don’t control that, they do. But there are a few tell tale signs that you can watch for. Since the vote will be close, about a 2 vote margin, they will need to have all of their people in attendance. So any absences by anti-gunners should delay it. We also think they are still scrounging for votes and don’t want to call the bill until they think they have the votes to pass it. The more time that goes by, the longer both sides have to work the bill. We think that plays to us.

The more times they change the bill, the more times they admit there are doubts about the bill and how far the impact will be felt. I would expect that once the House is done tinkering with the bill, we may see the final form pop up in the senate as an amendment to a shell bill (one that has no substance and just a title). There are four such bills pending before the Senate Executive Committee: SB-2532, SB-2533, SB-2534, and SB-2535. They could run the bill out and force a vote on it at anytime.

Again, every change at this point is an admission that they have a broad bill that is not designed to impact crime, but to ban guns from law abiding citizens. The Governor himself stated his intentions with the bill in his State of the State address when he said “No law abiding citizen needs…”

The week also saw the first salvo fired by gun owners in this year’s battle. Even though we detest the FOID card system, we are forced to live within it. With the ongoing problems of the State Police being unable to process the FOID card in the statutory requirement of 30 days, they and the Governor have received a lot of negative press. So much so that the Governor hired a bunch of people to try and clear the backlog. On the State Police answering machine, they even told Illinois residents to call back after 8 weeks! We introduced HB-4529. This bill would allow anyone who does not get their FOID card in the prescribed 30 days to sue the State Police for attorneys’ fees, damages and up to $500 per day in punitive damages.

Since the State Police seem to be unconcerned about placing gun owners in legal jeopardy because of their failures, then we will give them some incentives to comply with the law, until we can repeal the FOID card act.

We also saw movement on HB-4693, another so called gun dealer licensing bill. The real aim of this is to give Mayor Daley and the Governor the chance to run dealers out of business by creating their own mini ATFs to regulate gun dealers out of business.

HB-4694 is another attempt to strip Illinois residents of their right to self defense. The bill requires that firearms which are locked up must also be disassembled if there is a child in the house, defined as those under 18. There is no legal way to keep a firearm readily accessible for self defense.

We have also introduced a number of bills dealing with preemption and a few other issues. But being an election year, and the speaker’s limit of three bills per member, we are doubtful on the number that will make it out of the rules committee.

One other bill that got some attention was HB-4132. This bill would have banned the sale or possession of any replica military weapon. In fact it was so broadly drafted, that the impact would have been to cause the removal of the U505 exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, the closing of Cantigny and the Big Red 1 museum, as well as forcing the removal of all the artillery pieces at VFWs.

This is just another example of ISRA and NRA staying vigilant at the capitol. Not that it’s going to get reported anywhere where we stuck up for all the veteran organizations or stopped the banning of water pistols. But it was our work that showed what a bad piece of legislation this was; that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

But as always, the NRA and ISRA will be at the capitol to keep an eye on the antics of anti-gunners and promote the rights of Illinois 1.5 million law abiding gun owners. Keep calling your representatives and senators and let them know how you feel about pending legislation. Check in with the ISRA website for the latest updates.

And remember what the Governor said “No law abiding citizen needs…” it’s not about controlling crime, he admitted that. It’s about banning guns.

I'm concerned that they think they are within two votes of passing this. I know that only one rep from either party (Wyvetter Young D East St Louis) from Southern Illinois will vote for this. Where is the rest of the support outside of the Chicago delegation coming from?

Bobarino, I hate to admit it but I agree with you. Illinois just breeds corruption and political crime. I do place most of the blame on Daley but as you said the people keep re-electing him and his father since 1955 with the exception of Balandic,Byrne and Washington .
As far as governers (D)Blago is currently being investigated by the feds and our previous gov, (R)Ryan is on trial as we speak. The state of Illinois should be declared unconstitutional!! Then divided up between Indiana,Missouri,Iowa and Wisconsin. Sorry Kentucky, you guys probably don't want any of Illinois anyway because crime and corruption among politicians is contagious. Then make D.C. a state so we don't have to change all the flags to 49 stars.

PCGS65,

Rather than divy up IL completely, I think Chicago and its immediate surroundings should become their own state, floundering in the mess they have themselves made. They would just end up dominating the politics of their new region, and not for the better.

But speaking for MO, we'd be happy to have most of central and southern IL. Madison and St. Clair Counties might need some rehab first.

Sorry but there is no help for the People's Republik- I've written off the Land of Lincolnoski along with the Northeast and La La Land

Yeah your right Technosavant, I didn't think that there's no way in he** one could give away chicago or prabably most of NE Illinois. Indiana or Wisconsin wouldn't deserve that!! Let it fester in it's own pool.

Funny thing,
Everybody outside this state complains that we elected the idiots in office. Yet when you ask the folks who live here, nobody ever admits to actually voting for the jokers,,,,,,,

That's because none of us did!

Blagovitch and Daley keep getting elected by thosse dead people who keep getting up out of their graves at election time. I didn't vote for Blago. I don't live in the Chicago area (thank God) so I don't vote for De Mayor. I am hoping desperatley that the people of Illinois are smart enough to vote Blago out of office and that either Brady or Oberwiese gets the nod.

Thats because of chicago, Illinois is almost all RED on the political map except for the north east corner its all BLUE. Unfortunatnly for those of us who live in central and southern IL we don't have near the population as that small area, so "Chi-town":barf: controls the state politically. Something really needs to be done about this. The votes need to be divided more equally amoung the counties and not based on population. I don't know the percentage but the majority of votes come out of Cook county. :cuss: :banghead: :cuss: :banghead:

Its not only dead people either they drag homeless from the street during elections with the offer of a free meal or cash to vote their way!

1. Blagojevich could not have won last time without the votes he got from downstate. Blame Chicago all you want, he's a Chicago boy who only got nominated because of his Chicago powerhouse father-in-law, but downstate still helped elect him.
People were willing to vote for anyone who wasn't George Ryan or a Republican. This is the danger with Judy Baar Topinka this time--that people will vote for her just because she's not Blagojevich and not a Democrat. Those are NOT qualifications!

2. Ironically, Illinois apparently didn't include the Chicago area when it was a territorial area. "We" extended the border north far enough to get access to Lake Michigan (and increase the population just to be on the safe side.)
If "we" hadn't, Chicago might be Wisconsin's problem today.

I'd be more than happy to give Chicago to Wisconsin, or even Indiana if they want it.

I have no idea how Blago got elected . . . . .I voted republican, but it's EMBARASSING to be a republican in this state. Hell, it's embarassing to be a resident when you're talking politics. I think the idiots who are running this state have decided that we're just mini-california. How could you possibly justify an AWB bill when even the gun control idiots said the federal one didn't do anything . . .

I'll be happy to operate one of the dozers pushing The Peoples Demokratik Republik of Chikago, ILL into The Lake...

Just like Hizzoner Emperor "DICK" Daley II did to the Meigs Field runway.

Those are fighting words buddy. Don't try to dump your garbage in our state. However you are free to take Gary Indiana. ;)
