Arnie Duncan, the Chicago public school chief will be on Chicago WBBM Radio 780 this evening at 7:00 central time in “Talk to the Schools.” -- likely to push state gun control. Calls will be taken. Remember, it’s an opportunity to put our best foot forward and present our case to the listeners (not Duncan) as reasonable people while countering his basic myths. Be educated, be brief and remember you will have a short opportunity to present a specific question. So compress your question with a logical counterpoint up front.
For example: Arnie/Mr Duncan…If guns cause all this murder, then how come it only seems to be an issue in just a small handful of neighborhoods in Chicago? Why aren’t there any drive bys in my neighborhoods, where guns are even more available than in Chicago? Isn’t this just a scapegoat for failed leadership?
He has recently stated:
“Legislation to require criminal and mental-health background checks on all handgun sales, and to require the reporting of guns that are lost or stolen to law enforcement, have bipartisan support in the House of Representatives and should be sent to the Senate. The Illinois Senate recently passed legislation to prohibit the sale of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, and that bill is now before the House . These lifesaving measures deserve swift passage.” Arne Duncan – 2007 (The average number of rounds used in a homicide is 3)
“This doesn’t happen in other countries,” Arne Duncan said. “We just value our right to bear arms more than we value our children, and our priorities are fundamentally backwards.” Arne Duncan He went on to say that Europe has gangs like the US but no gun problem. (Not true, US style gangs are a new development for Europe and where they have taken hold, in areas like Manchester England, the violence and “gun crime” match or exceed America’s worst neighborhoods.)
Violence has escalated in England after the bans to eclipse the US, and even gun violence is reaching record highs. England is now looking to ban cheap Japanese swords and pointy kitchen knives since violence has not gone away. Gangs are smuggling in guns or making them from starter pistols and raw materials, regardless of the ban
Additional Points to bring up:
I don't know the call in number up front, but they will surely give it out. And remember, talk radio is generally on our side around Chicago, so WBBM AM is likley not the enemy here.

Additional Points to bring up:
- The CDC has found that gun control is not proven to work.
- It’s not just the NRA opposing this; there are at least 1.5 million legal gun owners in Illinois.
- How will a ban keep guns out of the hands of gang bangers anymore than the failed ban on drugs?
- Isn’t this a smokescreen to distract attention from failed inner city social programs?
- Isn’t the bigger issue the abysmal graduation rate from Chicago schools (51 percent?)
- Why are Chicago politicians and activists so afraid to suggest that the people in these communities take responsibility for their children?
- How many of the shooters used a legally purchased gun?
- How many of the so called “children” shot had previous criminal records or gang affiliations? (per ISRA) Studies by the Chicago Police Department indicate that 88% of murders are committed by people with previous criminal records and about 76% of murder victims had records as well. That sounds like a gang issue more than a legal gun ownership issue? What are you doing about that?
- The views of chiefs of police, political figures, often don’t reflect that of the rank and file (if this comes up)
- Why push to ban so called assault weapons, if the FBI data shows they are used in less than 2 percent of homicides. (if it comes up)
- Why push to limit magazine capacity if the FBI notes the average numer of rounds used in a shooting is 3 (if it comes up)
- Do you think crime might drop in these neighborhoods and there would be more police cooperation if the citizens could defend themselves from gangs?
- Since gun control has its roots in racism after the civil war (disarming freed slaves) isn’t this simply another method to control minorities? Malcolm X certainly would agree.
