Impact of the 2013 spike in gun prices

Ocare has nothing to do with the HUGE price increases we saw
Panic, yes; but this is also a big component for the increases at the big box stores and manufacturers who have to pay for the program. Everyone seems to think that the price increases were only at the retail level by folks cashing in on the panic - just simply is not true as the only cause - as mentioned, fuel, utilities, taxes, new regulations and on and on have forced prices higher and those costs will help keep the prices higher than before, even after the panic segment has calmed down. You're just not gonna see those $7.99 bricks of .22 again

We have yet to see the impact of the ACA at the retail level. Stores like Walmart are going to be hurting due to health insurance increases and they will shift more workers to part time whether the workers like it or not. Basically, it will be a case of ... we will offer this, take it or leave it. That hurts people. Prices are and will be going up and they have little to do with the panic buying that started after the Nov 2012 election.

All true, but not sure why you are telling me?

I just asked why One Ounce thought Ocare was related to the panic level pricing, b/c i don't see a connection unique to guns.
Well there's our confusion, I didn't think that OneOunce was saying that the ACA was the cause of the panic pricing, just, one of the factors for why the new normal is going to be so high.

And that makes sense.

The "new normal" for many products has an upward trend (20 years ago the AVERAGE price of a new car was 15,000, now there are only 8 models with an MSRP under $15,000)

Expecting ammo and gun prices in 2013 to be at 2003 levels wouldn't be reasonable with or without a panic.

But, the panic shot prices up BEYOND the normal increase you would see. So when prices come DOWN from the panic, they are going to come back to a price that is higher than where they were before panic.

So a $20 item went to $30 during the panic and will drop to $22 when normalizing. Without the panic, the same item would still have increased from $20 to $22, but it would have been a gradual increase over time along with other commercial products increased prices.

Not necessarily - before the panic, Walmart (who uses a fixed % mark up, not market pricing) had their Federal 4 packs of shotgun shells for $16.97; they are now $28.97 and they are not coming down6

Since November of last year I've seen 9mm go from $9 a box to $15 a box. Even back in April 9mm was running 22 cents a round when you could find it and today its going to cost 30 cents a round. Going from 18 cents a round to 30 cents a round in a years time is excessive. I cannot get 44mag or 45lc for less than $1 a round. Even Blazer Aluminum 45lc is $53 for a box of 50. Of course I've seen 5.45 x 39 go from 11 cents a round to an on sale price of 16 cents a round, not including shipping costs. I'm not even going to talk about 38sp or 357 prices as they too have gone thrugh the roof just like all ammo.
