Could anyone tell me their experience with these powders in .223? I've got the 4227 around because it works so well in .44 Mag and .357. There is little reference to it outside of old IMR loading manuals for .223. The 4198 appears to be commonly used. With these relatively fast powders are lighter bullets preferred like 40-50 grain? Or have these older powders been out-classed by some of the newer ones on the market? Any info would be appreciated.

Pete

4227 is too fast burning for any sort of balanced load in .223. I have one good .44 magnum load for it and have used it for reduced rifle loads, and that is about it.

4198 is ok for light bullet .223.

I prefer Winchester Ball and Hodgdon Spherical powders for easy metering, but have loaded some very nice .223 target ammo with Varget.
