hey guys I asked the old timers at the reloading shop last night about a few 44mag powders and I was torn between h110 and 4200. he said with me being a new loader he wouldn't suggest h110 for its less margine of error, muzzle flash, etc. he suggested imr 4227.

I'm shooting 240gr jackets bullets out of a 20 inch handi rifle for 100 yard deer shots and under.

on another forum someone said I should stick to h110 for hunting and jacketed bullets for the velocity because I owe the animal a clean kill.

is imr 4227 a bad powder for 44mag rifle hunting rounds and what I want to do with it? forgive my ignorance as I'm a new loader.

4227 is a fantastic powder for 44 magnum and had produced my most accurate handgun rounds to date. It would be perfectly applicable in a rifle

4227 will work great for .44 Mag in a rifle. I used to use it when I had one.

You should know by now I'm gonna agree with comrade Mike.

My most accurate load tested with a 240gr XTP and 4227. I compared it with similar work ups with 2400 and H110.

Velocity is still "more than enough" judging by the doe I took apart with one.

just worried about having enough arse for those rare 100yard shots. ive shot them with sabot slugs out of a 12ga and didn't get pass throughs and they ran like hell.

not trying to have that again.

The lighter bullets reveal a larger difference between H110/296 and 4227, from 150-200fps. Not that it matters since a Hornady 180gr XTP at 2000+fps ought to be able to kill a deer.

Loads for their 300 gr XTP show a difference of 75 fps. Either of them kill deer.

When I shot 44 pistol a lot I used 4227 quite a bit. It was a multiple use powder for my hornet also. It is a bit slower, but, accuracy was always good. Seemed to work better with cast bullets than 296 did. As for use on deer out a rifle I use Hornady 240 xtp out of my muzzle loader at around 1700 fps. It has passed though everything out to about 125 yards on broadside shots. If pushed out of a 44 rifle at similar speed you should get similar results.

240gr. xtp over 21.0 gr of IMR4227 is THE load for my handi rifle. I tried lots of other powders and bullets, but couldn't find any load better than 4227/240xtp combo

I have not used H110 for .44 mag but I have used Alliant 2400 and IMR4227. I only use 240 grain Hornady JHP XTP bullets in my lever rifle. I use jacketed and lead bullets in my super blackhawk.

In the handgun, I think IMR 4227 has less muzzle flash than 2400. IMR 4227 is very accurate in both rifle and handgun for me. With IMR 4227, I use 22.0 grains over the 240 grain XTP bullet.

In my opinion, it is a very good .44 mag powder.
