I have not shot rifles much...I'm more of a handgun guy. I have noticed over the last couple of years, I've added a 10/22, a M1A and recently a RRA ar 15. Now, buddies are telling me I have to add a bolt action rifle to the collection to round it out.
OK, I don't need ultra wah-zoo, but I do want something nice..no cool  . It will mostly be for punching paper, but I may end up hunting w/ it. I don't know what the budget is, but be gentle, I have adult responsibilities to remember...
So, what do you all think, what should I look at & why???

I don't own a savage 10FP, but from all the reading and research I've done, it sounds like a 10FP in .308 is what you're looking for. The best accuracy you'll get for the price and the .308 is great for everything from coyote to elk.

A savage 10FP with a Choate varmint stock. As for the why:

Another THR member was with me when I was breaking in the barrel and shot that group at 100 yards. It was 39.5 grains of RE15 pushing a Sierra 175g HPBT match bullet, kicked off with Federal 210 large rifle primers (not match primers) loaded to a factory-spec COL of 2.800 inches.

I'm guessing it'll shoot better with a load worked up specifically for the rifle and it's chamber.

Best bolt action out there now for the money is the Swiss k31. Swiss quality, powerful round (7.5x55), bolt cycles like butter , faster operation with the straight pull bolt, than the standered bolt action rifle. And they can be nice looking to., and highly accurate. 2006_0630Swiss0031.gif Im not a very good shooter, (old eyes) but this was open sights 100/yrds with an off the used rifle rack $100.00 k31 . I think I could hit a deer... 46-k31001.gif Good luck with your choice?

What characteristics should I look for? Do I need a heavy barrel? FF barrel? type of trigger? Then, I gotta worry about optics :banghead:
I like the more 'modern' guns ie the Savage & Remington but I'm not sure why I should go w/ one over the other...

for a potential hunting rifle, a heavy barrel such as a savage 10fp would be no fun at all.

for varminter performance at sporter weight, look at the 700 lvsf. a bit pricey at $650-ish, but i really am a fan of the couple i have. a 700 sps/adl is a great rifle for minimal cash outlay and lots of performance. look to the 25-06 to do anything you care to do w/ a rifle.

first off , if you may hunt with it, get a sporter weight , contour bbl.
Now I am a def CZ guy, they are beautiful, with a def old world European style to them, and for the money , their accuracy cannot be beat, nor their fully adjustable set trigger, which you can set so low, if you think at the trigger hard enough, it will fire!
That being said, any of the savage bolt action /with scope packages , for the money just can't be touched. yes they are ugly, but the synth stock will last forever in the woods, the accutrigger is second only to cz, and they consistently have remarkable accuracy , right out of the box. Pricing is also double tough, with the package guns going about 400 bucks, in a wide variety of cals. if they have one to get, get it in 6.5 swede, you wont be sorry. Also , if you ever shoot out a bbl, they are easy to replace yourself, just get the correct headspace gauge, loosen the bbl nut, take yours out, put the new one in , headspace it, and waa laa, you are done.
