I just got to thinking how the 1911 designed pistol is one of the greatest inventions & milestones of this past century, and in a little more than 2years it will turn 100 years old. I can just imagine when 2011 comes around all the 1911 firearm companies that i hope will produce some very nice commemorative 1911's. Its amazing how i can buy so many pistol desings, quite a few polymers, & even other very good other metal designed pistols, but at the end of the day none of them can out shoot & run as smooth as my 1911's, John Moses Browning a man ahead of his time, and he did it all without the internet.

It actually is a little older than that, it was adopted by the military in 1911, but the birth of its form with link system and thumb and grip safety was produced in 1910, the first prototype being back a few years before that, and 1905 being the year that they turned to .45 at the wishes of the military.

here we go, yeah i know that guys, but everybody knows it as the ''1911'', thats why it will be turning 100 years old, 2011-100=1911...the pistol that everybody knows as the icon.

I wish C&R status was conferred on all guns of a model where the first one off the assembly line is C&R Compliant.

Of course if they did that I'm sure F-Troop would have done away with the C&R license long ago.

In the year 1998, the Mosin Nagant turns 100...

Mosin Nagant in 1898? I thought it was in 1891.

Aren't you thinking Mauser?

Am I being pedantic?

If you're wrong, let that be the worst mistake of your week.

If I'm wrong, let that be the worst mistake of my week.

what was that movie..

John wayne: what the hell is that?
John wayne's movie nephew: it's a 1911
John wayne: it's only 1909...

man. with the way bills have been piling up lately, i just hope to be able to purchase my first one before the centennial. with my wife and i expecting, my next approved gun purchase seems to get further away the more time passes. maybe the "child tax credit" will help me out next spring...

I've already got a pay allotment to a bank acount with the closest branch over 1000 miles away so I will be able to afford a centenial 1911 (I don't know if anyone's going to make one but just in case, right?).

Many have tried to reinvent the 1911 wheel.

But try as they may, the wheel still comes out square.

I love my 1911

It is a Rock Island Armory with a 5" barrel. It is as close as you can get to a brand new Colt A1-1911. It is by far the best handgun I could hope to own in it's price range and dependable to a fault. I agree, this design is far superior to many of the new generation, fluff jobs. I am definitely proud of this fine American product. Now I just need to get a CCU so that i can make my lovely pistol into a carbine!

Please! Religious fervor aside how can you honestly place an antiquated 7 shot handgun up there with inventions such penicillin, the jet engine, radar, the microprocessor and nuclear power.

Were the 1911 not invented I assure you history would still read the same way, 1911 is way down there next to microwave popcorn in the order of importance.

Look at it like this, when the "1911" was designed Orville and Wilber Wright were still working in a bicycle shop.
As advanced as airplanes have become there is still not a pistol more advanced as the "1911".
Don't be fooled by the plastic.

A while back, we had a thread about contacting the Post Office and recommending a commemorative stamp for the M1911.

They failed to commemorate the M1903 and the Garand (50 years).

Anything other than a Colt would be inappropriate...if a centennial edition is issued.

i know it's not the greatest, never implied, or even up there with life dependant inventions, but it's certainly enough of a pioneering achievement in our world of interest, and someone as yourself would'nt have enough to talk about had it not been there ,(with over 3000 post) right? i think any design or invention that alters the course of history, in a certain industry should be recognized, especially if it's american.

I agree with the sentiment that the 1911, in the grand scheme of things, is just a well-designed pistol.

The stories that come along with it, however, make it a legend.

Then again, when was the smore invented? :neener:
