Bought a n M1922 M II Sringfielda couple weeks ago, and would like some info.
The barrel date is 9-35. SN is 13858 B The B appears to be double struck or mis struck. The bolt has M 2 stamped on the base of the bolt handleon the bolt body. The SN has been engraved on the underside of the bolt body, while the no. D2823-2is also on the bolt body near the front The no. c3998 is on the guide on the right side of the bolt. The rifle is a good shooter but I'm wondering if it's an arsenal rework.

Y'alls help would be appreciated.

The best answer is to quote from Brophy, Page 287.

"After the M2 gallery practice rifle was standardized in 1933, any Model 1922M1 rifles returned for overhaul or repair were modified by having the M2 bolt and magazine fitted to the receiver. When this updating was done, the receivers were stamped with the numeral "1' after Model 1922M1, changing the model designation to "Model 1922M11"; or, in the case of the later-type marking, an "I" was stamped after the M1922MI, making it "M1922MII. In addition, a letter "B" was added as a suffix to the serial number. Both "issue" and "sales" variations of the Model 1911M1 were updated with the new parts and had the new model dsignation stamped by hand into the receiver. Some modified rifles inspected show crude workmanship and an inconsistency in the size of the stamps used and in the placement of the marks on the receiver."

It would appear your rifle was overhauled and the 1938 dated barrel installed at that time, since an M1922M1 would have been made before 1933.

What you have is a genuine arsenal updated rifle, and a quite valuable one, though not as valuable as an unaltered M1922M1. Tops on an MII is around $800, while an unaltered MI service type can go over $2000. The difference between the service type and the sales type is that the service type has the Type B stock with the odd-looking pistol grip and the deeply checkered butt plate. The sale type has the standard NRA-type stock.

Thanks Jim.. The bbl. date is 09/35. Basically makes no difference as to the rifle being an update. It's the first one I've come across and I plan on hanging on to it. I hope I get as much fun out of it as the old gentleman from whose estate I purchased it.
