Hi guys, can anyone give me any information on this cap and ball pistol? Its a 44cal. with an engraved cylinder with armored soldiers and crossed cannons, TEXAS ARMS engraved there also. Case hardened and brass frame. It appears it is a very well constructed pistol, no play in the cylinder, the grips are walnut and the wood to metal fit is very good it does not appear to have been fired very much. Just wondering what it might be worth and when it was made? Thanks

It's a Colt 1848 Second Model Dragoon, based on the shape of the cylinder bolt notches and the trigger guard.

In order to determine the manufacturer and date of manufacturer it will be necessary to find the proof marks.

The date will (probably) be two letters inside a square box. This will be stamped either on the right side of the frame below the cylinder, on the bottom of the frame in front of the trigger guard or on the barrel under the loading lever. Tell us the letters and we can provide the year of manufacture.

The manufacturer's stamp may be located in the same place as the date stamp. There are several possibilities. This document covers the most common Italian replica marks; the manufacturer of that gun is most likely one of the Italian replica manufacturers, Uberti, Pietta, etc. This reference also provides date stamp codes up to 2003.

Value depends very much on condition, which is difficult to discern from a photo. In NIB condition with original box and paperwork it's worth about $300-$350 if it's one of the Italian clones. In average used condition the value would be around $250-$275.

I have a 3rd Model Dragoon on hold. Mine was made in the 1990s by Armi San Marco (can't remember the date code and it's 25 miles away). I'm paying $165.00 and it's in great shape. They recently had a NIB 3rd Model Dragoon for just over $300.00 (maybe Uberti). The store also has a Colt 2nd Generation, 3rd Model Dragoon (used) for $490.

many thanks guys I will look for markings tommorow when I get home and let you know. again thanks! Pedo

Tucker & Sherrard? Could be that was Uberti's intention. My references for a Tucker and Sherrard have different trigger guards and no cylinder engraving, among other things. I've never seen a Uberti replica of that gun, however. And the cylinder engraving is certainly not Uberti's standard reproduction of the Dragoon engraving, so you're probably right.

Hello again, just looking on the pistol frame in front of the trigger guard is the #494c9 pn and under the loading lever "black powder only made in Italy" man this thing is heavy! I do see a tiny bit of rust on the nipples, but nothing that wont clean up what impresses me the most is how it locks up like a safe, the loading lever is in perfect time with the cylinder, just a solid gun all around. thanks for the help guys- Pedo

I have 3 Uberti Tucker Sherrards and they are essentially a Texas copy of the 2nd model dragoon. The scroll work on the cylinder includes the lone star og Texas and the words Texas arms
