I wish I could have ordered some of that stuff when I was in. If I got along with the supply guy. Only knife I ever got issued was a crappy Gerber sheapsfoot knife that I could never get an edge on. NSN numbers change more than most Joe's change underwear. Another unit I was with put in a request for something useful, some sort of truck mount. Higher supply always goes off the NSN and never the "Description" field. The unit ended up getting a large building antennae.

In 1967 I was an armorer at Ft Benning and was told to report to Base ordnance. We were given the job of making sure that 300 some Vietnam hawks and the same number of High standard double nines,"Posse", were prepped. We were never told where they were going but they had some NCOs watching our work, not one of them over 5'5". The only word we got was Tunnel Rats. Firearms were tested extensively with 22 short. 3 or 4 years ago an online expert informed me that there were no hawks being issued any more. I found a mil spec # and purchase order from I believe 10th Mountain in the same year. The American Hawk Combat Tomahawk listed earlier seems to bear a great resemblance to what we did in 1967.

When I was in there was just about anything you could imagine in the NSN system.

When I was deployed my supervisor got into a bit of trouble. He ordered a 2 stroke dirtbike. When the C130 brought it in and they found out who ordered it, my boss had to go explain to our squadron commander why he did such a thing. His response was somethin like "I thought our squadron could use one". He was joking of course. He got a slap on the wrist (and so did the guy in Supply who failed to flag it).

FWIW in 1970 in RVN the 03 in charge of me ordered a 1969 Yamaha DT 250 and yes the C130 delivered it in Da Nang crated from the factory and I took a 3/4 Ton down from about 20 miles south of Hue on Hiway one on Chan Mai bay which is about 100 miles North of Da Nang. My capitan left his tour about 6 months before I did and put me in charge of that Enduro bike which we used to go between Spyglass Alpha towers on calm days.
When I left in 71 it got turned over to the new 03 to play with.

When my grandfather was 14 in 1944 he and his brother went over to the army depot here in town and pooled their money ($50) and purchased an Army Harley brand new in the crate. It was painted OD green. Later that year my grandpa painted it red and rode across country with a friend who had an Indian. Like I said they were 14 and had notes from their mothers "these boys are not runaways".......they didn't have motorcycle licenses back then.....slept in barns and under bridges.....but I digress.

I'm the receiving clerk at my base and this happens 2-3 times a week, minimum. I have to determine if the NSN was cancelled, the item was shipped as a suitable substitute, or if the chimps at the other end threw the wrong thing in the box.

It would be hilarious if the difference in dollar values involved wasn't sometimes enormous. I've seen a half-million dollar avionics widget get sent as a $3000 valve.

Remember that "NSN" does not indicate presence in the supply inventories.

Rather, the wheels have already been greased for smoother purchase/acquisition.

I personally know three principals involved in three of the entities listed and their motivation for jumping through the NSN hoops was as much for civilian consumer "street cred" as providing the military with gear.

"Your knife may have been in an article but mine has an NSN!"

While in the CONUS serving in the U S Air Force around 1971 we ordered a new radar antenna assembly for a F4 Phantom radar set. Imagine our surprise when we opened the crate and found 10 brand new M 16 rifles. Ooops. Might want to check that NSN again.
