Intermediate range accuracy

So, this weekend, I went shooting with a buddy of mine at the local 'shooting range'. While there, he was breaking in a new Remington 597 .22 that he had bought. Always one to do my share, I gave him a hand!

We weren't doing long range stuff, 25-50 yards, and I decided that I would break out my Ruger Mk II to try some longer range stuff...most of my Mk II shooting has been at 25 yards.

I found out that at these intermediate ranges(25-50 yards), while shooting freehand without a rest, I was more accurate with the pistol than with the rifle, which is not what I expected. I'm not sure if it's because I have been doing more pistol practice, or what...but it surprised me.

It has really caused me to rethink the idea of needing a pistol caliber carbine...having found this out with a Mk II and a Remington, I am dying to get to compare the accuracy of a 6" .357 with a lever action .357 at these type of distances.

Anyone else have any experience with accuarcy at intermediate distances?

I have noticed that I can shoot my MKII target as accurately (or even more accurately) as my 10/22 out to about 30 yds, shooting offhand.

However, the MkII Target (blowback, 5&3/4in bull barrel)is a lot more accurate than, say, a typical locked breech auto.

So I don't know if this applies to other guns. When I get my Ghetto Fabulous Hi-Point carbine in May I'll run it alongside my P89 and let you know how it compares.
I am expecting the Hi-Point, ghetto as it may be, to be a lot more accurate past 15 yds or so.

My Ruger II Govt model...

is more accurate than any 22 rifle I have ever shot with the exception of the CMP Mossberg M44 I got last year. I shot alot of bullseye with it until I hurt my shoulder and can no longer hold it steady. I have a red dot on mine because of old eyes. Someday I want to get one of the Rugers with the 45 grip....chris3

I must just plain suck then, because I can't even shoot my pistols as good as my rifles at 25 yards, supported or otherwise, much less out to 50.

Reading these posts makes me glad I decided to buy a Buckmark Standard instead of a 10/22. If I can outshoot a .22 rifle with red-dot sighted Buckmark, I'll be a very happy camper indeed.

Unless I'm resting my .22 caliber rifle on sand bags, I'm much more accurate with pistols. I never have been much of a rifle shot.

I'm accurate with both but prefer rifles/shoulder fired weapons! Talking about pistol caliber carbines my HK94 will shoot 2.5" groups @100yds and I was thoruohgly tickled by that. Not sure what is good with one cause they're kinda scarce, but my assault rifles and M.B.R.'s are only required to shoot 3" for me to keep one of them.

Buddy of mine and I got into the habit of shooting rimfire at 100 yards - him with his customized MKII and me with my Dan Wesson revolver. He was darn decent. I got to where I could hit the 12" gong about 7 out of 10 times two-handed off hand and pretty much every time off an improvised rest.

At 50 yards, I'm pretty sure I can do a fair bit better with a rifle than a pistol or revolver.
