Well I finely got the link to work. Since the opening post offers no details, I'll try.
Senator Chuck Grassley (R. Iowa) is putting a proposed gun control bill together to counter those the Democrats have moved forward.
This proposal is noteable for the following features:
1. Provisions that crack down on straw purchasing and illegal trafficking of firearms.
2. Legislation meant to increase safety in schools.
3. Measures designed to keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill.
Notice that there is no mention of banning firearms or large capacity magazines, nor does it include any form of restricting private sales or require background checks for private sales - all of which are key parts of the Democrat's proposals.
According to Grassley spokeswoman Beth Levine, “Senator Grassley, along with other concerned members, is putting together an alternative bill that addresses gun violence in a manner that doesn’t violate the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens in contrast to what appears to be in the bill proposed by the Majority Leader,” (Harry Reed, D. Navada).
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) commented, "Chuck Grassley is putting together an alternative we’re taking a look at,” McConnell said. “From his description of what he’s trying to put together … it might be something I can support. But I can’t go beyond that. I’m not likely to support what Harry is bringing but there may be an alternative I can and it probably be something that Grassley produces. That’s as far as I can go right now.”
In my view there is no reason to stomp on Sen. Grassley's proposal until it sees the light of day, and exactly what is in it can be read. On the face of this limited report I see no reason to get excited.
