Iron sights on flattop DPMS LR-308 for Appleseed shoot - crazy?

I'm considering using my DPMS LR-308 for an Appleseed shooting class. The class requires iron sights. A picture of this rifle model is below. What iron sights do you recommend? Also, since the mounting rail for the front sight is quite a way from the end of the barrel would this give me any accuracy problems? Or is this just a dumb idea? My alternate choice would be a 308 Saiga. If all else fails I could use a Ruger 10/22. (ammo cost is not a concern as I have plenty on hand)

Just a minor correction, iron sights are not required at an Appleseed. We prefer to train folks with iron sights so they know how to use them correctly. If anyone wants/needs to use optics that isn't a problem.

Make sure you get a 1.25 inch sling setup though, we use slings extensively. Nothing fancy, the USGI surplus ones are fine.

Yea, get a sling like this one, it is less than $8 and is very, very useful! You can use the scope (though you will miss learning a great, practical skill), but you won't be allowed to use your bi-pod, unless you have an obvious physical reason. http://www.ray-vin.com/tech/websling/webslinghelp.htm

If you "invest" in iron sights for your AR, I would highly recommend that you get rear sights that have elevation adjustments for bullet Drop, like this http://www.del-ton.com/AR_15_Sights_Detachable_Rear_s/124.htm

And consider getting a 'finer' front sight post, as the standard is @16 moa, I suggest this. http://www.del-ton.com/AR_15_Front_Sight_Post_p/st1004.htm

This would give you a very good set up for long range work.

Since it sounds like you will be coming to Davilla, TX for this Appleseed, you will have an opportunity to shoot out to 400-500 yards. However, a bulk of the course will be at 25 meters, so using a Ruger 10/22 with Tech-Sights would be a great way to take advantage of the lower cost of the 22, and the 22 offers a slower bullet speed, which makes it a very good training device.

I've had trouble finding a GI sling so I thought I would post the source I found:

The sight radius on the Panther is actually quite good.

CDNN and Fred's have slings, usually.

If you order from Fred's, be sure to tell them that it is for the April 19th Appleseed in Davilla You can even tell them that 'funfaler' sent you, may help or not

The A2 style sites from DPMS with a BDC for .308 are fine for up to 300 meters. Beyond that a scope is desired anyway.

I have absolutely no issues making tiny groups with good ammo.
