Is a Bore Snake Viper or Bore Snake good enough?

I've used the Bore Snake before and love them. I think they are great for a quick cleaning, but not a thorough cleaning. I've noticed if you run a clean, oiled patch through it after a few swipes of the Bore Snake and it will come out a little dirty.

This is the new Bore Snake Viper which is supposed to do a more thorough job by 50%. My questions are:



1.) Do you think it will do an actual noticeably better job?



2.) Is a Bore Snake Viper or Bore Snake enough cleaning for your gun or do you need to still run a patch and brush on a rod thru it?



3.) What do you think about putting Hoppes #9 on the front of the Bore Snake to clean out the bore and something like Breakfree CLP on the back to protect the bore for storage and then running it through the bore?





If all you'd need is to run a Bore Snake or Bore Snake Viper thru your gun when you shoot that would be really nice. Obviously other parts of the gun won't be cleaned by a Bore Snake and will have to be cleaned in a traditional manner.

I look at it like this... Cleaning my guns in detail, regularly, keeps me familiar with their inner workings. It helps me to detect problems before they get too bad sometimes. It also means I am fully confident that any of my firearms will go bang if I happen to need it at any given time.

I wouldn't go with just a bore snake... There are other parts that need cleaning too, like the extractor, breech face or bolt face... maybe the bolt carrier, gas system, depending on the platform of course. A bore snake won't help with any of that.

I think boresnakes do they're intended job well: Cleaning the inside of the bore. Beats rods and patches thats for sure! Still not a replacement for cleaning parts of the action by hand though.

Indeed.

Cleaning the bore is important, but it isn't the highest priority and it surely isn't enough to just clean the bore after a shooting session.
Snakes are fine for the bore, as far as I'm concerned ... a patch after is a good confirmation that you've removed most of the crud.

yeah lol. That particular product line is so well known that the new English verb 'to swiffer' is in common usage. Gotta love it.

the viper boresnake just has one extra cleaning brush. I dont think its necessarily worth the extra dough.

I boresnake my guns with hoppes on part of the boresnake. It seems to do a fine job. Maybe occasionally I will use a rod and bronze brush to really mix up the buildup. But I generally try and stay away from rods down the bore these days. Don't want to damage the crown or where the lands start.

This is for 22 rimfire though.

I would have to vote no, no, and no. Unless you are shooting with a chrome bore and chamber. If you are, then forget the hoppes and just clp with your bore snake. Just don’t forget to clean your snake. (that sounded weird)

NO.

You need a real cleaning rod, and bronze bore & chamber brushes.
And occasionally, copper solvent, nylon brushes for it, etc.

Chambers particularly don't get cleaned properly at all from cleaning the barrel with a bore-diameter bore snake.

The only use I have for bore-snakes at all is for a quick swipe through old Winchester pumps & lever-guns that can't be cleanded from the chamber end.

Even know guys who squirt a little Breakfree on the snake before using. Living by the ocean with high humidity seems to work for them.

I love test like that!! Used to be an examiner and during testing some would actually argue with the manual they were being tested on because it didn't agree with them.

Always going to have detractors and that is fine in a free country; keeps things interesting.

Breakfree ( lp) does not work it's about like 3 and one oil. Gotta be Breakfree (Clp).
