is a ptg bol or bolt head a better part than a savage made one?

I'm in the process of building a long action left hand bolt for a savage 110 (long story, but basically I want to rebarrel an old original 110 that uses a different bolt head and of course you cannot buy a complete modern style bolt. if you can, please send me a link)

But basically, I can get a ptg bolt head and body for $90, or a savage body and head for $60. Is the ptg actually any better, or if so, is it 50% better?

Old Savage bolt rifles have never had the same reputation as the newer ones so I would be inclined to spend a very marginal sum of $30 to keep that old Savage as unSavage as possible.

I don’t think you can go wrong with the reputation that PTG has.

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. The benefit of the PTG offering is the ability to pick a bolt diameter to fit your action vs a installing a sleeve on the bolt. Commonly done by smiths as part of the process of building hyper accurate long range guns. They often ream the action to clean up any irregularities and/or ensure uniformity which make that necessary to prevent the bolt from rattling around, ensure that it is centered in the action, and comes to rest at the same spot every time.

well the ptg is an ebay special without a diameter listed, so it would be a crapshoot if it was a tight fit or not. In fact, is there a possibility that it wouldn't fit in my action at all?

I don't know with any certainty, but I believe that it is possible that it won't. You could ask the seller to mike it for you. It could also be turned in a lathe or preferably an OD grinder to reduce the diameter. Just depends on how important this project is to you. Does the seller specify that it is for the old style Savage?

I have a pre-66 1st gen savage.

I have a couple of those myself. My .243 is a real tack driver for the first 3 rounds. Then you have to let it cool for a while.
