I have a Colt CCO which has a black coated alloy frame and a stainless steel slide (shown below). I love the gun, but I'm not a big fan of the light over dark two tone. Is it possible to have stainless steel refinished in black?

I have some Gunkote, but I don't know if it would stick to stainless steel.

Blue stainless?!? Maybe...

The barrel on this PPC gun is a Douglas stainless barrel. It took blueing just fine, but only after having been "pickled" first. Pickeling is basically a soak in acid, prior to the regular hot blueing process. Check with a local gunsmith to see if they are familiar with the process.

Good Luck...

I believe Wilson, Kimber and others all make coated stainless or alloy pistols; have a look at their web sites and see what they would charge to refinish the slide.

Might as well start with Colt if they still do that kind of thing for civillians.

My guess would be it would cost a few hundred bucks . . .

Robbie Barkman does somthing black for SS. I think he is Robar. Also Walter Birdsong can do a Black T finish on it for a few bucks that is very nice. Good luck!

I believe the typical "blackened stainless" that Kimber and Springfield have used is called Chrome Sulfide. Robar used to do it, I think Techplate still does.

Yep; S&W offered a "Midnight Black" treatment on some of their stainless revolvers that looked like a really dark bluing, but it seemed to be more susceptible to damage/scratches/etc.

Gun-Kote will stick to stainless and just needs a light blasting and a cleaning with thinner to prep it. Pre-heating will give you the most even coverage and best results.

From http://www.kgcoatings.com/ site:

"PRE TREATMENT:
Stainless Steel: Grit blast (all blasting should be done using aluminum oxide 120 mesh at 40 pounds of pressure.)"

We regularly apply our Tuff-Gun finish to Stainless parts. A disassembled slide will cost $37...return shipping included...two week or less turn around time.
