There is a new-in-box Remington 700 SPS for sale locally for $450 cash. It's brand new, never opened, never fired, all warranty cards and paper work are there.

I've wanted a .308 bolt gun to build up for the longest time, and I missed out on the FN PBR's that had been on sale at CDNN.

Is there any reason to avoid the 700 SPS ?

I want to make it as accurate as possible and put a target scope on it. That's all I want to do.

Should I spend more money up front on another model given my goals ?

Thanks,
Vaughn

I bought a .30-06 SPS for deer hunting this year. I think the accuracy is on par with most other rifles. I was shooting 1" groups with 180 gr rounds at 100 yds right from the box. I really don't think you can beat that price either. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one at all.

sometimes theres great bargains out there, doesnt mean the gun is bad. i saw two tikkas at a gun store last year, for like 425.00 each, thought that was a good deal....

$450!! buy it. If you choose to tinker there's lots of aftermarket stuff for the 700. If your doing a build I'd aim for a heavy barrel model, but you can always get another one later. Thats a pretty good excuse to buy more guns :). I wouldn't pass up a price like that just look the gun over really well before dropping the cash.

You might want to check out the Remington 700 thread a few rows down from this one. Might help you make up your mind ;)

thats a really good price IMO - discount online dealers are selling them for $490ish

It's a 700. If you don't like the stock, replace it later. If you don't like the trigger get it worked,(or adjust it if it's the 40x). Otherwise it's just like any other 700 except for maybe the finish.

Unless you really want an LTR, PSS, or XCR, the SPS is fine gun.
