Is There any Benefit to Joining the NRA for Life?

The NRA is not perfect - neither am I - but we are together in the struggle for the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms, not to defend any particular government, but to protect ourselves against all threats -foreign, domestic, private, or public.

Well, as you can tell from my sig line, the NRA has gotten a lot more from me than yearly memberships would have cost, and that's not counting the contributions to the NRA-ILA, Friends of NRA, etc. And guess what? They will be getting more!!!

Yes, it is that critical, and the greater the numbers, the greater the influence, and the greater the fear of the Brady Bunch et al.

Yeah, I just bought more NRA stuff, sent the ILA some coin and wrote Arnold Schwarzenegger some hate mail for signing that microstamping bill! Yahoo has a function that will alert you to any anti-gun legislation etc. I am amazed that almost every day some political puke is authoring more legislation that will only punish the honest firearm owner!

LIFE MEMBER!

NRA

I joined the NRA in 1939 as a jr in high school.kept my membership up whill in the navy.did not alway get the magazine, somthing about the mail went down with the ship.became life in 1960 and endowment in 2000.(you also get your name on the front door when you pass by.)dont forget the museum, fantastic.

Did anyone answer the question (I may have missed it) about Life Membership vs. sending them a check every 2 years? Is there a difference in the insurance or something?

I am a regular member, and I had trouble for a while with them calling all the time when I wasn't home and pestering my wife. I called them up and told them I never wanted to hear from them *by phone* again, but I would read anything they mailed or emailed to me. It hasn't been a problem since.

I'm looking to join another organization too, and not sure who. SAF maybe?

The differences I can think of are how much you might pay over time depending on membership price increases and the possibility of losing your vote for 5 years if your not-life membership lapses.

My spin

I chose long ago to upgrade to life and stop fooling with annual dues. Now years of activism (FNRA,EVC,ISRA etc.) I realize that I have a soapbox, I know folks who think like me, and where I live that ain't so common. I've taken to giving $ to NRA instead of wasting it supporting political candidates that have no chance of winning. It's a hard and bitter pill to swallow knowing that I have no political representation but I communicate with the lawmakers and speak my mind. My dues haven't paid for my subscription, premiums, hat and other goodies, my contributions have. If you think $35 annually is a "revenue stream" you should try and look at a bigger picture. The point of membership is that no other group can say to a politician, "I'm one of 4,000,000, I'm the NRA"

If for no other reason, your formula is flawed due to the fact the annual membership will likely go up in price over time. Someone already mentioned you aren't going to find a 5% rate. Even if you did, you would be taxed on the interest anyway.

Think of It as An Investment

Membership in the NRA is an investment in your 2nd Amendment right. I totally agree that you become a Life Member and then you donate as you can to help protect your rights and investment. I bought my son a life membership when he turned 18 as my dad bought mine. I recently upgraded both of both of us to Endowment Members. It was a great way to give a gift to both my son and the NRA.

So is it worth it to take advantage of specials offered on memberships? Absolutely, it gives a great justification to send money to protect our hobby.

I have been a Life Member since 1960 and just recently used the Endowment Member option.
Minimal shortcomings beside the point, the N.R.A. is in the forefront as far as protecting our Second Amendment rights.
We certainly need the Second as studying national politics shows.

If I took that same $500 and threw it in a bank account generating 5% interest,
:what:

I haven't seen banks offer rates like that...well, certainly not since I've been old enough to have enough money to save.

While not perfect, the NRA is the best thing going for the RKBA community.

MaterDei,

You're right! Though the NRA doesn't always have its act together, nobody else is out there doing anything good for me. I recently upgraded my membership from an Endowment Member to that of a a Patron. My Life Member leather jacket was starting to show the wear so I ordered a Patron Member jacket while I was at it. I'm not someone who likes to advertise for anyone but I do like wearing an NRA jacket.

The NRA-ILA is NOT funded by regular membership dues.

It is the political/lobbying arm and ALL its money must be kept separate or the NRA would loose its tax status.

Even as a benefactor I continue to give money to ILA.

The OP wanted to know what differences he could expect as a Life member versus continuing a yearly membership... NOT whether he should bother with the NRA or whether it was worth it. He stated clearly that he is already a member.

These pro-NRA threads are priceless, all the martyrs come out of the woodwork, patting each other on the back. :)

I would feel guilty about not joining, except I would hate to deny people the pleasure of looking down on others who dont. I might feel gratitude if I thought you contributed money for my benefit- but the fact is that you support because you feel its worth it for yourself. The fact that you end up supporting my right to own guns is completely incidental.

Edit: I dont hate the NRA, im just entirely indifferent.

I got the $500 offer and took it. That was well over two months ago. I still have as yet to see my jacket.
I did get a card saying they were backlogged.

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for is your gratitude. Good grief. I'm trying to protect a right for myself, my children, and my grandchildren. That's why people vote. That's why people contribute money to political campaigns. That's why people fight in wars. Unfortunately, the money I contribute DOES benefit you. It's rather sad that you wouldn't do the same for your fellow gun owners. Yeah, man, you're a real rebel.

Just to clarify, my question is just like what user Dorryn mentioned, an argument in Annual vs. Life membership.

I've been reading american rifleman since clinton was in office and I like the NRA as a whole. Granted, their not perfect, but I think they do more good than the macro 2nd amendment organizations give them credit for.

After all, there are is a lot of misinformation out there. The liberal media paints them as nut jobs that want to give loaded guns to toddlers, whilst certain groups accuse the NRA of secretly wanting to outlaw firearms ownership.

I've already made up my mind that I like the NRA, I'm just looking for feedback on whether or not joining for life is worthwhile compared to annual.

I know that if your willing to pay a few dollars more each year, compared to a life membership, you can get neat little goodies each time you re-up your membership each year. And from what I've seen, the NRA also sends you free bonus stuff like bumper stickers each time you extend your membership. Last time I had my dad renew my membership down at the grand american in sparta IL for $25 and I recieved 50 commemorative fiocci shotgun shells and two sets of bumper stickers. I know most of the goodies the NRA offers with their memberships are tacky, but they do have cool promotions once or twice a year.

Seeing that it takes at least twenty years for the life membership to start making subscription dues cheaper, at the yearly rate of $35, I was wondering if the benefits you get from life membership outweigh all those neat little NRA promos.

Thing is, I've been looking at this renewal paper with an offer for this neat looking knife since for a few months now and the line next to it that says I can go life for $470 more.

I'm thinking about saying hell with it and nabbing the knife and upping to life if the supreme court knocks down the DC gun ban in the Heller case this summer.

Anyone want to throw their two cents in, in regards to the goodies?

I did receive some nice goodies prior to joining as a life member but they way I figure it now, not taking any freebies just leaves more money for them to fight for the cause!

Life member and glad I did it.
several years ago they were raising rates to $500 but I could convert to a Life membership with 3 payments of $100 each. Now it is a similar deal for 5 bills now or 1K later.
see a trend here?
why not jump now? the mass mailings and such are not an issue.

I just upgaded to life this year. I got a 500 dollar deal so it will pay off over time I suppose. My club requires that I be a member so why not? It is easier, less hassle, and you get a say ( a tiny one, one vote) in how your NRA is being run. What is not to like?

I signed up for a life membership in the NRA in 1963. It cost me $100.00 which was a lot of money for a young sailor back then. I was stationed on Midway Island so there wasn't a lot to spend money on anyway.

I think it was a pretty good deal when you look at how long I've been a member. Let's see....45 years divided into $100, that comes out to $2.22 a year. The younger you are when you get it the less it's going to cost you.

Now for you guy's that think I am a cheapskate, when I became more financialy able I moved up to Benifactor Life.
