Ok so this post is like, really old. Sorry for bringing it back from the dead:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=588312&highlight=centurian

I was having problems with my youth model 505 .410 shotgun "dropping" shells. The thread in the link above has more detailed description of what was/is going on.

I just wanted to post an update on the situation:

I replaced the shell stopper with new one. The new one had a different shape to it and it did improve the situation. But it did not cure it. Now instead of having FTF and FTE issues 60% of the time, I have them about 20% of the time. Better, but nowhere near good enough.

Conclusion: I need to send this thing back to Mossberg. This creates a new question however, can I ship it to them via the regular postal service? Or do I have to go to FedEx/UPS?

Also hoping that since it's been 2 years, that they'll still accept it...

And hope I didn't void any warranty by replacing the shell stopper by myself...

I would call Mossberg and get a return authorization number so it gets routed properly when it gets there. Yes, you can use the USPS, and I prefer it by a mile. Just make SURE it is unloaded, and tell them what it is at the counter. If they give you any grief, be polite and ask to speak to the Postmaster. You can ship a long gun to an FFL, and Mossberg definitely has an FFL. They may cover it, but you never know until you ask. The fact that you already monkeyed with it is not a plus.

Sorry to hear of your continuing difficulties with the 505. I posted in the original thread with an ammo recommendation but didn't read past the first few posts.

I too have a 505, and when I first brought it home (2009) mine did the same as yours except worse: it happened every time I cycled the action.

Because the gun was brand new and unfired, I immediately called Mossberg and a very nice lady in customer service hooked me up with a return authorization number and complete instruction on how to ship it to them. Turnaround took about 15 days, and they shipped it back to me directly. It's worked great ever since. When I got it back, the shell stopper had been replaced but there was also clear evidence that some machining had been done inside the receiver around the channel that the shell stopper fits into. I got the impression - though no one ever directly admitted it - that this was a known issue with the .410 pumps.

My repair cost me nothing except one-way shipping. Since you've already tried to affect repairs, they may charge you but their rates are not outrageous from what I understand.

I've had 2 mossbergs do the exact same thing to me, a 500 and a 535. I've since written mossberg off and will never buy another one of their shotguns.
