so, i have a mossberg 500 and i just picked up a new forend for it at gander mtn. i take my old one off, slide the new one on and go to put the FE nut thing back on, but i realied that the forend metal tube (not the magazine, but the metal forend tube thing, dont know the actual name of it) didnt go far enough through the new forend for the nut to go back on, so...i dont know what to do, the new forend has mossberg 500 stamped on it, i dont know why it wont fit, and i would hate to take a hack saw to a brand new FE. any help would be much appreciated.

I'm greatly confuse-ed here. Can you post a pic or 2?

Compare the overall length of both fore-end/action bar assemblies. Are you talking about the 'sleeve' inside the fore-end assembly that slides over the magazine tube?

The tubes come in two different lengths. You can find them on Brownells by searching on action slide tube assembly. They come in 6-3/4" or 7-3/4".

Yeah, I have that gun and had that problem too. I've learned that you need to KEEP YOUR RECIEPT because everyone sells the wrong forend length and the length you and I need aren't anywhere to be found. Keep buying them and return them when you find out that it doesn't work. I shortened mine and I did a good job on it and it looks good. That was my first gunsmithing job. However, it was a pain in the @$$ and I would not recommend anyone else try it. Just keep buying them and returning them.

Edit: After I shortened my new forend I realized it would have been WAY easier to simply make a mark on the factory forend where the very back edge of that "U" shaped metal strap thing on the back of the magazine tube meets the factory forend and take a hacksaw to that mark. Then the forend is all done save some sanding and smoothing. Besides, if you screw up you can always order a new forend cheaply from mossberg.
