It Happened To Me...

Running back inside wasn't option, if i did that who knows what would have happened.. i was away from "the property". I was 30 yards aways from the gate and within spit reach of my wifes car.

I dont agree with some of our laws but i obbey them. If i was armed that would Illegal because i was in a public sidewalk. If i shot them and stayed, i'd still be in trouble, if i shot and left been in more trouble. With all their capabilities they may be able to trace that back to me and i wouldnt want that happening, thats the last thing i'd want is a Det knocking in my door asking to see my gun because a couple of hooligans were shot in my corner. Can they really do that? The tracing thing.

I use the smartcarry holster

I use a few holsters but the smart carry would have worked in your situation. I use mine when I'm jogging, not wearing a belt, just in my undies, etc. It straps around your waist with elastic.

When I take the trash out to the alley I throw on my smart carry and a pair of shorts. It holds my gun, extra mag, and a little maglite flashlight.

Most importantly - get out of LA.

LOL. I thought I was bad. I never go anywhere without my spare mags. But, I normally just take my gun if I just need to go somewhere real close like around the corner.

I wish you had been carrying so you could have justifiably killed these scumbags and saved a fellow citizen from being their next victim. We all know darn well that these animals are going to do this to a dozen more people before the month is out.

i saw someone get out from the driver side of the car and ran towards me with a large object, it looked like a big hammer on one hand and a knife on the other and he said "wassup foo, wassup whatchu got" I was incoherent at this time, it's early in the morning.. i just stepped back and tried put my thoughts together... Another guy came out the passenger side and ran close to me with his fist up in the air and then demanded my cash
There are so many things I would LIKE to say about these thugs, but our society has successfully banned us all from discussing certain things about these thugs.

I live in Southern California, Los Angeles.
If you do not already own it, get John Machtinger's book: "How To Own a Gun and Stay Out Of Jail." Check the California Penal Code, or this very good plain-language synopsis, put out by the Attorney General of California.

Our carry laws here is a joke.
You are uncertain whether you're able to defend yourself and your family from grave harm on your own property, yet you're referring to the concealed-carry laws of California.

Question: Do you have a CCW/CHL, or not?

Technically, it doesn't really matter. You're on your own property. Arming yourself is perfectly within your right. Defending yourself up to and including the use of lethal force is also perfectly within your rights, subject to certain criteria for the use of deadly force. Essentially, you must be in fear of immediate and grave bodily harm or death in order to use lethal force.

We have to get shot, stabbed or killed first before we can defend ourself.
Absolutely not true, that you must wait until you're dead or near dead to defend yourself. You absolutely can use the degree of force required to stop an attack that would reasonably result in grave bodily injury or death. You are not legally demanded to first sustain that attack. In that plain-language reference link I provided, above, check pps 29-32 specifically.

Even without a concealed-carry license, your home is pretty much the one place (in California) where you may possess and carry a firearm pretty much without restriction or licensing, and where you may use that firearm in the defense of you and your family so long as you're in reasonable immediate fear of death or grave bodily harm. (Or your place of business, if you're the owner of that business.)

If you still have questions, check with a good attorney for advice.

BTW, not everywhere in California is so blind and draconian as LA County. Orange County has a fairly relaxed stance on legal concealed-carry. I lived in a rural northern county in Calif. carrying legally for 10yrs, so I know that some places regonize your right to be armed. The thing is, it's up to the sheriff in your county. Might be a good reason to consider moving to a friendly county.

As law abiding citizens we do our best to do just that: obey the laws. However if something you heard outside made you go to guns, whether it was a false alarm or not, the last thing I would do is go out there unarmed. Best case scenario (most likely): nothing there, no problems.
Worst case #1 (very unlikely): nothing there, but a cop sees you, decides to hassle you, and busts you for carrying a gun illegally.
Worst case #2 (unlikely, but consider what happened): the bad guys decide they want more from you and/or your family, your family loses a husband/dad/mom/family member or your lives are shattered, because you were obeying a law designed to make you a sheep.
Best case and Worst case #1 seem kind of insignificant compared to #2.
I'm sure you weren't the first person that was victimized by this particular group of bad guys and you certainly aren't the last.
Carry always.
