I have a 1948 Ithaca Mod 37 20ga that I recently purchased as a project firearm. It is completely stripped and off to the factory for reblueing.
Today myself and friend who is a master cabinet maker stripped the stock and forearm completely and lightly sanded out the all the dings and scratches. Even the shotgun serial number was stamped into the front end of stock.
We then restained both. Wow, did it come out beautiful! The wood still kept all it's character and wood grain lines far more than I expected. It looks new almost being 57 years old.
We are now deciding what type of final finish to apply? Should we do a polyurethane or laquer finish? This will be sprayed on since my friend has every known spray gun and tip known to man it seems.
I'm looking for suggestions from someone who has done this type of finishing in the past, or does this for a living. Not a hip shooter "who read about doing one".
All suggestions will be considered. Thanks.
