So on a whim I organized a range day for some of my co-workers. At first, I got only one response to the invitation, and I was under the impression they all thought I was a nut case for mentioning shooting. But then, I sent out a final invitation with time & directions, etc., and about 10-12 more people expressed an interest.

Now, most of these people had never even SEEN a real gun, let alone held or fired one. A lot of them seemed to have a frightened curiosity. Many were concerned about safety or that they'd somehow get shot by the other people at the range. I had calm and educated discussions with the sheepish ones, and I talked a lot of them into going. In total, we had 12 people, 9 of whom had never even seen or touched a gun.

So I rented out some lanes at the local range, and we went. Some people's eyes were huge as they first set foot inside their first gun shop and shooting range. One woman looked like a deer in the headlights. Another had a .38 special revolver at home bought by her dad for protection, and she was frightened to death to touch it.

So we took to the lanes. Everyone except one person had a blast! One guy is going to buy a pistol now. Another guy was like, "That was sweet! I've gotta take my brother and do this again!". Another guy is going again with his GF & her dad. The woman with the .38 at home rented a .38 special S&W at the range (she was afraid of bringing her own gun), and she loved it and wants to go again. So long story short, we're gonna go again, and more people want to come. Some of our bosses even expressed an interest!

The only down side was that the deer-in-the-headlights woman was horrified. She fired 3 shots from the Glock 19 she rented, and turned to me and said, "I'm done." Try as I might, I couldn't convince her to continue. She was freaked out by the noise and the recoil. She was deathly afraid of the gun. I explained to her how it works and showed her how to use it, but to no avail. Oh well, I guess 8 out of 9 antis converted to anything ranging from at least not being afraid of guns to loving them and wanting one isn't too shabby! :D

Plus, on the up side, I got to shoot about 10 different handguns without having to rent them myself. :D :neener: Of all the rented ones people had, I shot the best with the XD (and, of course, my CZ 75BD was the best in my hands). Everyone loved the CZ rubber grips.

So the moral of the story is... invite people shooting. You never know what kind of response you might get or who you might convert. I was shocked at the level of interest at my workplace. I would have assumed they'd all be too media-brainwashed to even consider coming, but I think my demeanor and calm discussions with them about firearms convinced them.

Oh, another beneficial effect of our range day was that there's been a buzz about it at work since then. I hope it will spark some good firearms-related discussions in the future.

There's one guy, in particular, who is totally brainwashed. When I asked if he was coming, he said, "I don't believe in violence. I'm for peace." I said, "That's great! I'm for peace, too. So what does that have to do with you coming to the range with us again?" He had no reply. Later I overheard another co-worker who came with us ask this guy why he didn't come. He replied, "Guns are evil." :banghead: He actually said that. :banghead: I wasn't close enough to spark up a discussion with him and set him straight, but I look forward to doing it in the future.

We need a smilie that does "applause". WAY TO GO!!!!! That is awesome. And when each of them does the same, eventually, all the better.

Congrats!

Thanks, SpringMom! Just trying to do my part and be proactive. :)

I'm sorry, I can't hear you. Don't fire the gun while you're talking!---Frank Drebin, The Naked Gun

:p Great quote, hilarious movie (& apparently TV show... Thanks El Tejon).

Thanks! :) Hopefully round two will convert some of the people who couldn't make the first trip (3 or 4 more people were interested but had conflicts).

my girlfriend is a little similiar to your "deer in headlights."

She loves that .22 that we shot at the range, but when I set off the .45, she flinches real bad.

We both haven't gone in awhile, but I think if I take her often enough, she'll get used to it.

My girlfriend first started out with a Glock 19, and enjoyed it. However, her carpal tunnel was acting up, so more pistol shooting was generally out that day. She tried the M1 Garand, but the recoil was a bit much (she has tendonitis of the shoulder that she's healing up from).

Just last week she, myself, and a friend went out to the desert outside of Phoenix to shoot. She really likes my AR (lightweight, balanced, low recoil, and the pistol grip makes it much more comfortable to shoot), and I fear I might have to buy her one in the near future. :)

Great job Juno! Yes, it seems some people will be just turned off by firearms as you mentioned by the "deer-in-headlights" woman. Can't win 'em all:rolleyes:

I have also taken some people to the range- all have been women. They actually asked me if I could take them. All of them had a blast (I know cheesey pun:neener: ) One of them has expressed interest in buying her own pistol for range and HD.

Good on 'Ya!! I have made a couple of shooters in my department, and have tried to get a rowdy little group together for some quality mental-health exercise, but so far all efforts have fallen through. Unfortunately, a couple of our managers are hyper-paranoid about firearms, and will literaly haul your young tailfeathers into Human Resources to lodge a complaint. Maybe with the new year we can get some outings organized.

For several years, I have offered a "trap and skeet lesson" as a part of my Church's yearly Auction. Most of the people who sign up have never shot a gun before. And most seem to really enjoy it. I would recommend to others to offer shooting in some format as a donation item to your Church's Auction or Fundraiser.

Good job.

I've found that it's best to have newbies "double up" with ear plugs AND good quality, high rated, ear muffs. Reducing the noise as much as possible has a psychological affect and makes the recoil and muzzle blast seem less. Conversely, shooting unprotected or with very minimal hearing protection seems to also amplify the blast and recoil.

For new shooters, especially those who are hesitant, I have them double up and then start them with a .22. If you get the hearing protection just right, a .22 seems no more intimidating then a BB gun.

I love trying to convert open minded antis. I named the AR I hopefully get for Xmas after one of my anti friends. Then I promised her we'll go shooting when the weather warms up. Shes psyched.:D

Try naming guns (especially scary looking ones) after your anti friend(s). Worked for me

New Shooters

I have a standing offer, but you get more people if you make an event.

Personally, I only count someone as a convert if at some point they go shooting without me or if they call me to see if we can go again. I have a few... and one of my converts has converted a few people. It's like the best pyramid scheme ever. EVERYBODY wins!

True enough. I can't say I've converted all 8/9 completely, but I'd say most of them would not only go again with me, but would go by themselves or with their other friends/family now. And the others have already expressed an interest in going with me again.

It's like the best pyramid scheme ever. EVERYBODY wins!

Can't argue with that! :) Two guys who had never fired a gun are planning on buying one now for HD & range use, and one lady who had a gun but had never fired it now wants to go again and wants to get some ammo and a gun safe (she previously kept it unloaded & was afraid to touch it). Another guy is going to take his brother again. Another guy is bringing his GF & her dad.

Your only error I can see is not starting the one gal with a .22 I made the same mistake when I started my girlfriend in shooting. My 6" smith 19, even with light .38 wadcutters was too much. I borrowed a MK II and several bricks later she is now very competent with it and is starting to shoot the 19 with .38 special Some people just take time to get used to shooting

Well there are converts and then there are converts.

I don't care whether someone is converted TO enjoying shooting. That's there business.

But if they're converted AWAY FROM irrational fear and loathing of guns, they're less likely to support anti-RKBA policies. That's a win even if they never touch another gun for the rest of their lives.

You don't have to write poetry to support freedom of speech.

Especially with this sort of newbie, you really ought to start off with .22s and doubled-up earpro. Just a thought.

Sounds like a good time. I keep trying to get newbies into shooting, but my usual range doesn't allow "guests" who have this or the immediately surrounding counties on it. Kind of counter-intuitive.

He thinks "guns are evil" huh?
Tell him he's right, and we need to disarm our police and military so they'll be morally superior.
