So after hemming and hawing for the past three years, I decided to finally step up and finalize my decision for the purchase of a .308/7.62 semi-auto. My criteria were (in no order): reasonably light weight, lefty-friendly, reasonably accurate (to compensate for my own lack of skills), modest level of recoil, I kind of like bull pup designs, a well respected manufacturer, gently on spent brass so I can reload and, well, something nice enough that I'll keep it for a lifetime (I tend to 'buy and hold' in most cases anyway).
I looked at the PTR's, FAL, AR10, RFB (which I really wanted to buy but couldn't get over the bad reviews) but ultimately the SCAR17 kept calling my name. So I just wrote a check for a new SCAR Heavy in FDE.
Unlike many firearms owners/collectors, I have absolutely no need for such a thing. It'll see duty at the range, on some BLM land shooting and perhaps some hunting now and then. But I just wanted one and that seemed like as good a reason as any.
That said, beside a CA bullet button, any recommendations for add-ons or changes? I typically keep things very stock so I'm not looking to make any major changes or incur any expenses so no 'curb feelers or fuzzy dice' to dork it up. But are there any 'must have' changes for it? I'm told that a Geissele (sp?) upgrade is a nice add on and I've done so in most of by black rifles, but I may hold off on one for a bit only because they are typically very pricey.
Also, there is rumor/lore/wives tale about SCAR 17's being rough on optics. I was planning on using a Vortex (4-15?) or Leica (3.5-15?- btw the finest piece of glass I've ever seen) or a laser range finding Nikon (4-10?) that I can swap out of another rifle in my safe. Suggestions? My eyes are 'mature' enough (the US Navy found them to be 20/10 when I was in Pensacola but that was a long time ago) that a RDS isn't a good choice.
And yea, I've rarely been so excited about such a purchase.
Giddily,
B

Thanks for the tip on the Vortex. I'm told there is some available BLM land about an hour south of Monterey. A friend has checked it out and shoots there.
The 4-15 may be the one I already have - bought it used but virtually new. It's currently on my Tikka Sporter.

Yeah, just looked it up. Panoche...looks nice. Just too bad it's 4 hours from where I live, Santa Rosa.

Vortex optics are great. I plan to put the same scope on my M&P 10.
