Iver Johnson Breaktop

I was given an Iver Johnson 32 S&W revolver in excellent condition but it is in pieces because a part inside was broken and the owner can't find the part. Is there any one out there that can recommend someone to re-assemble the revolver that might also have the needed part.? I am not sure what the part is called that is broken. Thank you

You need to take it to a gunsmith. Check your local yellow pages or search the internet for a gun shop in your area. Be forewarned, it will cost you more than the gun is worth. That's IF the gunsmith can locate the missing part. So get an estimate before you have them do any work. Iver Johnson breaktop revolvers were very inexpensive in their day. They have little if any collector value. The .32 S&W cartridge is anemic, too weak for self defense.

Many gunsmiths won't work on them because it just isn't worth their time or their owners' money. The other issue is that many of these guns were made for blackpower cartridges. 'Smiths don't want to "sign-off" on one of them and have the owner have one come apart on them. In order for the H&R/IJ/A&H/US Revolver/Harrington & Wesson revolvers to be worth anything, they must be in very very good condition. Unfortunately, not many of them are because of the corrosive cartridges used in the day. The metal was also softer than present day.

You occasionally see someone who has one for sale. If you really want a working one, offer him half what he's asking--it'll be the best offer he's had in a year, and cheaper than reparing yours. Then, after you get it and try it, you'll realize you overpaid.

They really aren't that complex, mostly what goes wrong is a broken spring. Gun Parts, Inc. has new made replacements, but they need to be hand fitted, due to slight variations in the original models.

Thank you to all who replied. I found a man that needed that old Iver Johnson breaktop more than me so I gave it to him for his father who had the needed part to repair it from some pieces he already had. I just saw him two days ago and he has already been shooting it and having fun with his father who is 83 years old.

I see so many of those going around as part kit guns at gun shows.
I'd love one, 'cept .32 S&W ain't exactly as easy to find as .32 S&W-L.
