Just got this ol' beatup shotgun from a family friend that didn't want it in her house (hoplophobe type)

it looks like its seen some action, but not abused, shoots OK.

It has a really odd sort of choke on it though, and i was wondering if anybody else has one they can tell me about. it has 7 different choke settings, and various range settings. do these actually work? It has a muzzle break before the choke part, so i'm sceptical.

info??

Great Gun !!

Polychoke most likely.
Cutt's Compensator if not.

These are GREAT guns. The bbl is NOT removable. Go to Harley's Nolden's forum down below and see if Mr. Nolden has information and/or owner's manual. Super nice guy and very smart and helpful.

I'd clean it, read the use, care, instructions Mr. Nolden provides, and shoot it.

I would NOT use steel shot for say waterfowl. Only other things I'd do is pattern it, perhaps a Pachmyer Decelarator recoil pad, and if need use a iron, damp cloth to "pull up" any real deep scratches and lightly sand.

Another one of them best kept secrets.

Then you too can be out dove hunting and hear " hey, that gun has a turd on the end of it". :D What we called 'em anyway.

Be sure to shoot some skeet with it. Them 'turds' resonate off the high/low houses and distracts your opponents. Which is a good thing when sodas or lunch are riding on scores. :p

Run 'em

Steve

Besides those mentioned, there was the Hartford choke and Mossberg's proprietary Select-Choke. All were twist to use except the Cutts.

They work, but only patterning will tell just what kind of pattern you'll get at a given setting with a given load. Many of these run from too loose to way too tight.

Sorry, that link opens to gibberish for me.

I wouldn't sneer at a shotgun just because it had an adjustable choke. After all, one can get new barrels for most shotguns, and chances are your Higgins is a Mossberg, Winchester or High Standard in disguise.

If it feels good, buy it....

It submits to the old "save target as 'jpg'"
(lucky guess)

I resized to 640 as it was over THR's max and I don't have a pic host - sorry.

J.C. Higgins Model 20 Chokes

This is going back, almost 4 years to be exact. TH Member Bigjake ask a question on 12/17/05, "J.C. Higgins Model 20 choke???" There were several replys.

TH Member Hawk in his reply attached a photo of a Model 20 choke which is not the choke my Model 20 has.

When I obtained my 20 it came with 3 choke tubes which tread into the barrel. They were for short, medium and long range shots. In one of my relocation moves with my employer two of the tubes came up missing. I am trying to replace those two tubes. By the way my 20 is in prime condition and still shots like silk. The only problem it is a little on the heavy side for competition shooting. But is great on the wings. Does anyone know where I should look for replacements for the two missing choke tubes. All help appreciated.
