January/February postal match

Just FYI, the 2 96 scores up are about on par with what you'd have to shoot slow fire prone to win a very competitive CMP vintage or modern military match if your offhand and rapid scores were up as well, and would get you well into the silver cut scores, flirting with gold. We're giving you a high bar, but you can get there!

Say what? I have never done any of those, but I assumed the winners were shooting all 10's. I have only done Appleseed, which I highly recommend for this type of shooting. They teach the proper use of the sling, Natural Point of Aim, shooting in all three positions, firing sequence, and range safety.

I also have to admit, I was shooting in a short sleeved shirt, last snow was a year ago....and that was a fluke. I admire those who are laying in snow to shoot. Makes me cold just thinking about it.

And yes, the M14 is not a NM model. It DOES have a new production barrel and receiver slapped into veteran wood.

And Random 8, not sure of the second category. I only have 1 non-rimfire rifle that doesn't have a 10x fixed power scope. Does a Ruger American in 7.62x39 count?

Yep, your M14 counts as Modern Military OR service rifle for the CMP and would be class 1 in this match as a "basic" M1A.
You can absolutely shoot the Ruger in Class 2, or you can "shoot up" a class with the M1A. You seem pretty damn proficient with it.
Everything you learned at Appleseed applies pretty directly to CMP or NRA high power shooting (except offhand is fired with no sling). If you earned a Rifleman patch, you're a player. In CMP "games" competitions, which involves modern military (non-match ARs, M1a, foreign semi autos) and vintage bolt actions as well as the John C Garand classes, you'll rarely see a clean 100, even at Camp Perry. Rapid fire low to mid 90s, Slow fire mid to high 90s and offhand 90 or better will usually put you in the top 3. EIC service rifle (National match rifle and course) gets tougher. You'll see more clean targets, and you'll need high 90s prone, sitting and at least 90 offhand to be in the running in good conditions. Get out and try some sling shooting this summer, you'll enjoy it! You'll either be shooting this target at 100 yards (reduced match) or a target with the same MOA at 200 yards. If you dive in head first and shoot a high power national match course or "Leg match", You'll be shooting basically this target scaled at 200, 300 yards and the MR6 at 600 yards. It's easier than it sounds until the wind blows. Throwing a lot of info at you there. Bounce me a message if you're interested in putting that M14 or M1Garand to good use this summer.

Well, I said I'd give a report from the Finnish Front, and so I shall. Took advantage of severe cold and winds to infiltrate behind Soviet lines. Was just warm enough to get them out of their bunkers for a bit of scouting today. Left ski tracks across a patrol route, then doubled back on my trail to some spruce trees and waited in ambush at 100m from behind a curtain of upturned roots. They should have stayed in the bunker and faced the Komisar's Tokarev. That's how we used to write up "after actions" in our military matches on SR.com. Added a bit of fun to getting out and shooting these historic weapons.

Did better than I thought I would, but not as well as I could have, luckily for the group. Did some winter component cleanup and slapped together a load with 108 Barnes Frangible, 51 IMR 4064 and some well used Serbian brass destined for the scrap heap. Couldn't get a proper zero, had to hold above the black with the sight set at 300m. Not conducive to precision. The rifle liked the load though, need to tweak the zero and charge, see if I can get it to land on an even yardage notch. Ran 96-2x, prone in the snow. Sling was too short for the heavy coat I had on, but the 6" of dry, grainy snow made a pretty solid position. Working on pictures. -9F air temp at time of shooting. Rifle is a '43VKT M39 in 7,62x54R. Never thought about a tie. Right now Maxxhavoc is in the lead with more 10's. I think his m14 is class 1, not national match.

I remember these! Also recall having team matches with country vs country! It was great fun, writing up those reports... :)

second gun, class 2, Winchester M94 in 30-30, Hornady 150 gr American Whitetail
couldn't see sighters, so took my best guess and blazed away - cold and just wanted to go home

not a bad group, considering all, but not in a good location
oh well, next time.....
very good group , just low. Had it been in the black it would probably toward the top in winning.

I had a cyst removed from my eyelid a couple days ago letting it heal more before I try shooting again. So hopefully next weekend

I think this is a 90-1x. If a shot breaks a scoring ring does it receive the higher value automatically, or does it have to be more than half in the higher ring? If it just has to break the ring, I got 90-1x. If it has to be more than half, I got 89-1x.

Also, a disclaimer... I thought I had ten rounds loaded. I shot them, and found only nine holes. Did I miss one? Did I miscount and load nine? Did I pull a Patton (If I did, it had to have been my x-ring shot ;) )? I loaded another shot and got one of those nine-ring hits. I didn't win my division anyway, so I don't think it really matters, but I figured I should tell you all.

Same lower as before. Upper is from Brownells. Sights are straight from Mao's dollar store, via fleabay. Couldn't get them to adjust elevation either, so I'll have to figure that one out. Used "Kentucky elevation" and came out halfway decent (I thought) anyway. First time this upper has been out! Notice my sling mount :D Shoelaces are handy to have around. I tried to use the sling, but it was pulling my shots WAY left, so I shot for score prone unsupported without the sling. Ammo was the same Federal American Eagle 55 gr FMJ. Except that last shot, which was an American Eagle 50 gr HP. Glad it shot to the same point of aim (maybe). The sign I passed on the way to go shoot said 33.8 degrees on the way out, and somewhere close to 38 when I drove back. Wish it was about twenty degrees colder! Since I hike rather than risk the drive, I think I'd rather deal with frozen mud than liquid mud and just throw on a couple more layers.

Al considered, great shooting

Yes, 90-1x. A shot breaking a line counts. Nice shooting. I like the field expedient sling swivel.

Went today and was going to try prone with the AR since I already tried kneeling, and again the two wood benches that can be moved to get off the bench were occupied all day, all the other benches are stone which can't be moved. I can't go next weekend so I'm out of the game I guess, until a next match. Winded up doing pistol and testing 30-30 ammo instead because.

Well... unless it really was an 81 ;)

I hate to be "that guy" who has excuses for all his misses though, I wasn't trying to complain or anything, just something to talk about, I guess. I think my conditions were quite possibly the best of anyone's!

Well I gave it a shot, but both rifles I tried to use shoot pretty high. Had no sight picture and didn't hit the paper half the time. Oh well! Maybe next month.

Well, Tx, at least you got out and tried it! I hope to put up one more target this month. Snow is over a foot deep in the yard, and my club has given up on plowing the 100 yard range. They piled up a bunch of snow, almost to the level of the benches, so sitting or prone on the 100 yard line is impossible. Maybe I'll drag a cable spool out into the yard and fire from atop that or try to find a high enough spot to fire over the snowpack.

Part of this exercise is to demonstrate the difference between accuracy and precision. IMHO, groups don't mean a damn thing if they aren't on what you intend to hit.

class 2, sporter
Winchester M94 30-30 Armalloy finish
Hornady 150 American White tail
used sling, elbows on bench

score 42
about 25 deg, wind in face, made eyes water, didn't help

Well, it looks like Maxxhavoc is the overall and class 1 winner with a 96-2x and one more 10 than me. Great shooting! Not sure about the class 2, I was surprised we didn't get a lot more scoped "deer" rifles out as these were legal rifles for class 2. Guess they'd rather shoot small groups off a bench. Thanks for all who got out and gave it a whirl. Hopefully we can keep some of these running.

In the final stages of load development for my main deer rifle so that will be for next time o_O
Looking forward to the next competition!

You guys that shot class 2 can sort out the winner there, it's kind of all over the place LOL. I had hoped to put up one more target this month, but 50mph winds last weekend blew in a 8' snowdrift where I shoot in the backyard, and the rifle range is closed until further notice. Up to Maxxhavoc to get the next match rolling, looking forward to shooting in some balmy 40 degree weather!

Thank you to all for this thread, I'm going to try some Federal premium in my M1A when I can based on seeing results from this thread.

I know I'm too late but I wanted to give it a try. Class 1: AR-15, BCM upper with CMMG lower, 223, detachable rear A3 with fsb front. I had better groups with subsequent tries but this was my first and best score. Sitting with elbows on knees braced with sling.

Are we going to do one for next month? How about a bench rest class as well? If we do something similar again as well I'm going to give it a shot. This time I'll just post a target below the target for score to have something to aim at!

Lionking has a rimfire match posted for this month. Maybe come April we'll see.
