Jerry Miculek shoots the Mosin Nagant 91/30 and M44 carbine

The hang tag is Finnish. His long rifle is actually an M91 made in Finland with Finnish stock. The barrel was either VKT or Tikka-made. As fast as he shot, off-hand, with the m44 and his shots were great. Kind of discards the notion that Mosins are inaccurate junk.

Excellent marksmanship especially with that carbine at 300 yards, I doubt seriously if I could even see the target at 300 yards, let alone being able to call my shots, amazing.

some do shoot good mine will keep 2" at 100 yards just 12" high need a taller front sight
Taller sights are available on Ebay . . . but just for fun, you might try seeing where the zero is if you fix the bayonet on the muzzle; I've read that Russian/Soviet doctrine was to establish zero with the bayonet fixed.

Miculek is a world class shooter, no doubt; way better than I'll ever be. But . . . we don't know if ALL of his videos - at least, those without a large audience present - are the result of just one take.

Mosins are anything BUT junk. Most of them, at least. My New England Westinghouse is as well made and finished as any Mauser and is a very early one, with the 31" barrel and no handguard. Never had one. It ended up in Finland and has the Finnish acceptance stamp "SAA" in a rectangle. The barrel is dated "1915". I have been told that all NWHs were dated 1915.

It shoots silver dollar sized groups at 100 yards, with surplus ammo. I have gotten groups under an inch with Norma ammo.

In Jerry's hands it would no doubt print em' all in the same hole.

Offhand!

Guns are machines. Hating or loving them serves no purpose and is irrational. But who said gun guys are rational.

i dont hate mosins because i think theyre junk or anything of the sort.. i hate them because i find them to be uncomfortable and awkward, the straight comb stock i find to be quite uncomfortable, the bolt handle being as far forward as it is requires too much shifting to operate, plus it means you cant mount a scope over the action.. and the stripper clips because of the rims barely ever function properly,

Every time I see a Jerry video I'm humbled and humiliated. Freehand at 300 yards, no scope, and great grouping. I hate that guy for all his talent. For him it is just another day at work having fun. Me too but with a computer.

I'm thinking that the Hornady ammo with the steel casings is remanufactured milsurp stuff with new bullets and maybe new powder.

There's no doubt that Jerry is better than most. But I also wonder about the "one take" idea. Especially at 200 yards and hand held. And to be fair he does seem a little surprised at his "luck". So maybe he is that good and does miss now and then.

Hmmmm..... I'm going to try pulling some of the craptastic bullets from my own milsurp and replace them with some Prvi Partizan proper copper jacketed bullets I got a while back and try it. And I may just dump and re-weigh the powder as well.

Up to now the milsurp ammo I bought shoots more or less "minute of hillside". Yet with Privi Partizan brass and copper ammo the guns shoot easily to 3 inches at 100 yards. So improving the ammo would be a nice step.

The story is that Hornady is buying new primed steel cases from a manufacture in Russia.

I will never forget the time Jerry and Kay came down to their range one night where we were hanging out and he had a new 500 S&W revolver he needed to sight in and said "You fellas may want to clear on out, we're fixin to knock down some dirt dobbers." (From the tin roof we were under). 3 shots later they moved to the rifle range.

Squaded with him a few times over the years and never met a professional shooter, more social and humble than Mr.Miculek.

It would be a mistake to minimize "These old eyes.". A very talented gentleman and as nice as they come.

And just think, if the Mosin wasn't accurate he wouldn't be able to do that

Should see what he does with other firearms. I think at nationals in '09 I beat him in 2-4 stages but that was out of 18.

I have a 91/30 with all matching numbers, and a Frankenmosin Type 53 in M1944 stock made of the best parts of four different rifles (but with tight head space between the bolthead and barrel).

"some do shoot good mine will keep 2" at 100 yards just 12" high need a taller front sight "

My groups are a bit larger but that's my fault. They do shoot high with the top of the post aligned with the top of the rear and the standard 100 yard bullseye on top of the post. The Mosin 100 arshin/yard setting is basically aim at belt buckle, hit somewhere on upper thorax between 100 to 500 yards.

For vintage/modern military matches, I put my initials in red magic marker on my target at what should be my aiming point for 100 yards.

I have been experimenting with a "Tennessee elevation" sight picture for 100 yards that involves bisecting the bullseye with the top of the rear sight, with the post at the bottom of the bull near the bottom of the notch.

Others have suggested slipping some thin black plastic tubing over the front sight, then trim to zero. (Personally I prefer to have the post near the center of the front sight hood, and have adjustments to the rear sight.)

The Soviet instructions for firing at the enemy was to aim at the belt buckle. That would place rounds in center-mass and put the enemy down.

Jerry sure is a cool guy... As far as the takes go, I wondered the same thing, then noticed that he opened the box of ammo and took three rounds out. It was fresh box. Unless he was really trying to be sneaky, I think he did it in one take.

I think he did it in a single take as well. The guy lives and breathes small arms of all kinds, and shoots thousands of rounds a week, every week of every year. If anyone can pull off a group like that on the first try, it's him.

A coworker has shot pro-am competition with him several times. He said Jerry will slow down and show everybody else what he is doing so that they can try to do the same thing...and nobody ever comes close. Incredible shooter, good guy, and a personality fit for tv.
