JJ just signed to shoot for Beretta. Looks like he'll be shooting their new 92X for Production. I guess he'll be another one of those guys who shoots a sponsor's production gun, but keeps shooting his custom 2011-type things in Limited and Open? Or maybe Beretta plans to make him something??

In any event, it's good to see Beretta getting (back?) into the competitive pistol shooting market.

He had a deal with Tanfoglio for several years. Last year his main sponsor was Armscor and he was shooting custom 2011's in Open and Limited (the two divisions he won at Nationals) - Limcats, IIRC. He did well with the Tanfo's in production and limited, but had problems with the open guns.

I'm a huge Tanfo' fan, but their factory open gun design is.... not perfect. Too many popple holes = too short of full-pressure barrel = have to load too hot to make major = busted guns. When I decided to get an open gun built on a Tanfo', I took a totally different approach, because of just this issue.

And here's the answer on what JJ's gonna do for open:

I'm always psyched to see someone trying to make something other than a 2011 work as an open gun!

That is what they call flat shooting. Comp, weight, and hard grip, the gun is about level with the empty only a couple of inches out.

I guess we will find out about the durability of the system when overloaded.

Note the relatively long compensator. "Shorty" open guns with lots of popple holes have been the fashion the last couple of years, but a bigger compensator can just help a ton. Limcats use long comps, so, if my memory is correct that he was using a Limcat when he won last year, he's already used to the feel of those.

A highly effective comp really does seem to help with slide velocity, which should help with frame and slide longevity. Since I used a long-format comp on my Tanfo'-based open gun, I'm putting that theory to the test!

They would have to pay me DEEP into 6 figures for me to shoot one of those things for 6 years, and I'm not a top level GM and national champ. 6 years of wasting his talents in his prime is what this looks like to me.

He won Limited with a borrowed Atlas gun

It will be interesting to see how it goes! But there are a lot of athletes in other gear-heavy sports who lost their game after changing gear in a contract situation... and others who kept going with new sticks or wheels or whatever.
