New at retail I'd say $250 around here - but you didn't get it at retail. Brass isn't new, powders may or may not have been stored properly and you don't know their age (or exact weights), and the misc stuff isn't anything thats particularly expensive to begin with.

Assuming the normal retail markup (which your not paying) plus the private sale discount I am gonna guess less than $100. Lets say $75.

You bought open powder  even if was GIVEN to me it goes on the lawn.. not in my cartridges. Keep the 4895 and 231 if its sealed... otherwise if all plant food.

Notwithstanding the powder, mabe $200 worth of 'other stuff'.

Value and my own question

Primers in my area $1.79-1.99/100
Powder 14.99/lb and up, depending on brand

Brass, varies widely, but usually $10/100 cases or higher new

RCBS accessories, about $20 bucks.

Why throw out opened powder? May it not be what is stated on the label? Is shelf life a concern, whats the deal here? goes on the lawn, can it be used as expensive fertilizer? Or will it just break down okay and it's organic enough not to hurt anything. How do you properly store powder beside seal it up tight and keep in a dry environment. I live in th e PNW, so sealing up tight is oh so important when you can usually ring water out of the air these days.

I don't throw my powder out after loading 100 rounds, I just seal it back up and use it at a later date when I have enough brass or energy to load another batch.

There is no way to tell whats in the can. It *LOOKS* like 4895.. are you sure? Wanna bet a gun or your life on it? :what: Did the previous owner accidently mix a fast pistol powder in with a slower rifle powder?

A lb of most powders is all of $20 new. Dump the opened stuff. Gunpowder is an excellent fertilizer... full of nitrogen. Breaks down completely. Safe to dump on a lawn.

That's the kinda price I like to hear!!! The last reloading deal I ran across involved a whole bunch of leftovers (including some new Dillon and Redding dies). I figured I make a lower offer for the whole lot when I got there, but he beat me to the punch and stated the prices were FIRM. I cherry picked what he had left.......and after I paid him, he GAVE me all the rest of the stuff. He threw in a couple big coffee cans of .308 Win. brass as well as a couple extra boxes of Speer 168 gr BTHP bullets too!! He was selling them (168 gr bullets) at $10 a box and I only had enough money left to buy 6 boxes worth.......should have bought all 16 boxes.

Buehler mounts are excellent mounts, though I must say here that I haven't seen any of recent manufacture.I mounted a set on my 30-06 colt back in the early '70s and they haven't moved yet.I believe they are machined from 1 block of steel.

It's worth what you paid for it.

If you wanted to replace it then figure
~$18 per pound of powder
~$20 per 1000 primers
~$7 a shell holder
~$15 per 50 completed rounds.

I'm not sure if nitrocellulose is a good fertilizer I don't know how it breaks down. Burning it is fun.

Black powder is ok if you spread it out but it can harm some plants if you try to use it like MiracleGro. Burning it is more fun.

The open powder would be a concern, even if I knew the guy. If it were me, I'd dump it. The other stuff looks good.

definitey don't use opened powder. the worst case/typical scenario is this guy filled his hopper from can A, and loaded a hundred rounds, and let it set for a few days, then dumped it back into can B, forgetting what he'd loaded. it's not so much a humidity issue, although that is a possibility. i think that would more likely result in clumpy powder or a dud, instead of an exploding gun.

i'd say you've got about $180 worth of stuff retail there, and you paid $40 for it

Dump the powder and send me those old buehler rings, they are old and may have metal fatigue, I old so I can afford to risk the rings,,,,BUT I would NEVER risk useing opened powder, even if it was my Fathers!

Hey, if the guy was responsible and knew what he was doing, the powder's probably fine. If it looks like other powder of the same variety, that's a good check. I probably wouldn't worry about it that much - just start low - The "1/2 pound" lots aren't really enough to play with tho...
