I really like the tactical sling. I was wondering if I could put something like that on a rifle I just purchased? Or wouldn't it be a good idea because the barrel is longer

For your intended use I suggest you look at a Nikon Monarch 3-9 scope or a Khales if $ are not a concern with a JP Rifles mount. Many people chose scopes of greater mag than necessary and give up good light gathering and field of view.

Personally, I could easily use a 9X scope to hit a man sized target at 1000yds other conditions permitting. It's the same as using iron sights at about 120yds.

Ammo: if you are not going to reload it is hard to beat Black Hills reloads. You didn't mention the twist rate of your barrel but it is hard to go wrong with 68 or 69 gr match. If you have slower twist (1:9) generally the most accurate loads are 52-53 gr HP.

Again if you are going to reload Barnes Varmint Grenades are not very expensive and will work for hunting as well as practice. The American Eagle 52gr (hard to find) have a very good rep for accuracy.

Thanks for all the great feedback guys :)

As for the optics...I'm pretty sure I've read to the end of the interwebs on any and every combination that I could mount. I was initially set on an ACOG, but as I become honest with myself about my primary uses (300+ yard shots on small mobile targets), I soon had to come to grips with the fact that the ACOG would be for looks/coolness-factor over function. So the ACOG was out...

I soon understood that what I needed was a variable tactical scope with a range out to 8-10x, BUT it needed to remain compact (none of these 44mm+ objectives) and durable. It didn't take long for me to see that the US Optics 1.8-10x would be the perfect scope...if I could only rob a bank first. To outfit the USO like I would want and add a Larue mount, my budget would be only a distant memory...so that (reluctantly) went out of the equation.

After some exhaustive reading and research, I finally narrowed down my choices to the Nightforce 2.5-10x32 and the IOR 2-12x32. They were comparable in price and durability...but in the end it was the extended range of the IOR that won me over as well as some strong personal recommendations by people much more knowledgeable than myself. The 2x on the IOR should be just enough for close encounters, but I really didn't want to go over 2x to the 2.5x on the Nightforce. In addition, the added distance I'll get with 12x vs. 10x on the long end with the IOR should be beneficial for those distance shots. The deal was finally sealed with the illuminated MP8 Dot reticule on the IOR. I placed an order for the scope with Scott from Liberty Optics (a fantastic guy to do business with and one I would recommend to everyone regardless of your optics needs) and it should arrive this week. I'll be back with pics and a range report in the coming days!

Again, thanks to everyone for the help!

oh yea did you order your white oak barrel with the matching headspaced bolt?

Yup!

Stangs55, is the furniture on your AR in foilage green or is that Larue't tactical FDE? I like it because it is different, but kinda bright. Are you pleased with the color? Also, have you thought about a Trijicon 1x4, or 1.25x4 scope?

The only color you see if Flat Dark earth from Magpul.

And Why the hell would you shoot at a Comorant???? Isn't that the black bird that swims in ponds? Those birds are cool.

Stangs55 i just placed my order with White Oak Armament same barrel and bolt combo you used on your rifle.we should compare notes in the near future (loads, bullets, etc)

Because we have a large managed bass fishing lake that is regularly stocked with forage, bass, redfish, and most everything else you can imagine. In the process of creating a fishing utopia, we're inadvertently created a cormorant utopia and they've become an extraordinary nuisance. So much so that Texas Parks & Wildlife has given us a permit to shoot as many as we can. They fill the lakes and kill the fish. There's not enough .223 ammo in Texas to take care of them all...I'm just trying to slow them down.
