Just received my CMP garand, seeking advice on how to clean the stock.

Try a can of denatured alcohol, wet the stock with it and use scrubb pads to loosen the varnish and crude, wipe the mess off with paper towels. redo until you see the wood but don't try to completely remove the oils, it gives the wood character, reoil the stock with Formby's or a Danish oil.

you know the more I look at the picture of the rifle, the more I realize that the stock looks so nice I don't think I would do anything to it. The only ones that I work on are one's that are really dark like almost black, or new wood that has never been finished. The stock there just has a nice aged redish tint, fairly well matching handguards, and just enough character to be cool. I wouldn't mess with that sucker.
