Recent difficulty sourcing sight parts has me wanting a 50-year future-resistant strategic collection of spare parts for my small collection of pre-MIM K/L frame Smiths.

For those of you who've seen a significant number of old Smith's coming in for service, can you suggest what I should have on hand to keep my revolvers running for my grandkids? Figure 50 years at 500 rounds/year, 38 Spc only.

The subject revolvers are: 19-5, 10-6, 586 and a 686. For reference I retimed the 19-5 with a C&S Hand and Stop, so retiming as necessary doesn't scare me.

I figure:
- New Oversize or Factory Hands
- New Cylinder Stops
- New or used Firing Pins (rivets, springs)?
- Used Trigger and Hammers?
- Used Ratchets (any point? used will be worn. . .)

Anything else?

Oversize stops can be had as well as the oversize hands. Good thing to have on hand. New springs and hammer nose rivets for sure.
I have bought up a few S&W and Ruger "kits" on Gunbroker to get the spare parts to have on hand for my guns.
Ratchet pads can be swaged using a special tool. It is/was made by Jack Gutridge and sold by Brownell's for years. I haven't seen it in the catalog for a long time, but I have called Brownell's to ask for contact info for manufacturers of tools that they no longer carry. They usually have that on file. I was able to purchase several tools that way over the years.

I've never felt the need to keep spare parts on hand. Knock on wood and I know I'm lucky, I have never had a part break on a S&W Revolver, even a firing pin and I've got several that have over 25k rounds through them. I do keep blue and stainless screws in case I buy a gun with buggered up screws. The only parts I keep are a good selection of different rebound springs and some of the reduced weight main springs as well as I do have some sight blades in various heights. I guess if I shot competition I would probably keep parts on hand. We all know now that I've bragged on never breaking a part, something will break on my next range trip.
