Gotcha. Thats a beautiful Polish. I have 2. One was my first M44. It looked like someone pounded nails with it. Then I lucked out and got one of the brand new unissued ones. I've got a good variety of M44,s, M38, M91/59 carbines. Plus 91/30 variations and some Finns. Gotta say they are the best bang for the buck. Luckily most of mine were purchased when most were under 100.00 bucks. I don't shoot them or my other milsurps nearly enough these days. Got a partially torn rotator cuff and bicep tendon in my R shoulder.

Shorter length barrel like the M44 is loud . Just try taking off the muffs and feel the deafening sound.

I made the mistake of shooting a 16 into somthing close to be and that rang my ears for a week, I'd rather keep them on now even when I hunt lol:)

How do the m38s shoot? I've been wanting one of those to put in an ati stock or Boyd's. Rather not sporterize one and ruin it but to just replace stocks and keep the old one.

Condition equal they shoot as well as any Mosin. They handle better than a M44 because they aren't muzzel heavy. Same with 91/59. You can spot them because they are cut down 91/30 and still retain the longer calibrated rear sight. Now that its winter and I,m wearing hevier cloths I'll have to take a couple Mosins to the range. With my shoulder issue those light carbines with metal butt plate are painfull real quick. A scout scope mount on a M38 in a sporter stock would make a handy carbine. 7.62x54r will handle anything in the lower 48. It's still popular in all the eastern block countries for big game up to moose and bears. I've seen sporterised Mosins on quite a few documentary shows.
