I am looking for a self defense knife type pocket knife and this one seems to fit what I can carry by law in NC. What is everyone's thoughts on this knife?

Decent enough knife for the price. They seem well made. The AUS6A steel is a little bit better than the 440A that Kershaw typically uses.

I never thought that folders made much difference in a fight. Knives are more of an 'urban legend' in the topic of self defense. Everyone knows a guy who knows a guy, but when the topic of knife fighting appears, everyone admits that it never happened to them personally.

Having said that, quit screwing around. Ken Onion makes great jackknives, but that's not the thread topic here.

If you going to carry something serious, carry a Strider.

What is this, 9mm vs .45?

OK, I'll play.
Yep, no doubt about it, them Striders and Battle Rats and Kabars are good for killin' sentries and prying open ammo crates and building lean-to shelters and such. Unless they're strapped onto the side of your leg or LBV they loose a bit of their tactical/practical advantages, though.

Back here, in the rear with the beer, I have complete confidence in my ability to get my little ol' Vapor (good steel, good price; buy it) out of my pocket and open (thanks to the neat assisted-opening feature) to apply a pre-emptive strike to that suspicious envelope (narrowly averting death by a thousand paper cuts) before your average Joe can dig his sharpened pry-bar out of his Camelback HydraStorm book bag and clear of it's custom 550cord wrapped sheath with Airborne-certified retention system. They sure ain't gonna do you no good in the trunk of the neighborhood Police car, either, when Soccor Mom, 1 Ea., calls you in for a "Possible Terrorist with a Horrible, Scary Machete." OMG OMG OMG!

But, I digress.
The biggest thing to be careful about with the Ken Onions is when people mistake them for switchblades and wanna try it, too...c'mon c'mon c'mon gimmeeeeee please?
Also, If i'm not mistaken, the blade on Vapors are under the usual 4" limit so easily pass the "lay it across the palm of your hand" test, too; which is a Good Thing for us Sheeples, who have to deal with those less-informed types and assorted office workers on a daily basis.

On a more serious note, though, 4" and under ARE enough to lay open a wrist, forearm, or do a 9-points drill in a bad situation, provided you have the training and the will to use them.
Getting back to the first line of my post, it's all about Placement; right?

I don't carry a Strider (or any other brand knife) for defense. I don't think that's their real value.

I don't carry a big macho blade, I carry a Strider SnG with a stone-wash finish.

It does have a large finger choil, but the cutting edge is right at 3-inches. I've also owned two Kershaw Whirlwinds.

I sold the Kershaws.
