My uncle brought home the Obendorf Mauser factory sporter in 8mm and put a Lyman peep on it and hunted it from 1947 to 1958 in upstate New York. Then his Model 1955 Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine in 30-06 came in and had a Zeiss 4x scope mounted at Abercrombie and Fitch. My Uncle hunted the new 30-06 until the cancer sticks took him a few years later.I came home from AIT in 1965 and was left these, a couple pistols and lots of fond memories.
The 8mmx57 is pretty accurate, still tight as a tick and I like it! I am a little in awe of the Mannlicher after I shot up the Norma ammo it came with and found it shot 3/4" groups at 100 yards off the bench. I put it up for MY posterity!

Abercrombie and Fitch used to sell and mount scopes?!?!?

This MUST have been in the 40's, because they sure as heck haven't done that at any time in MY life. These days, A&F relies solely on 15 year old ******-bags to stay in business.

Abercrombie and Fitch used to be THE high-end primo outdoorsmans shop. Hell, that's where Hemmingway got his suicide shotgun. But they went bankrupt and got bought out twice since then, and now subsist by selling taiwanese jeans to yuppies.

Fine guns.

Indeed. Abercrombie and Fitch we very big in the safari outfitting business. They outfitted Theodore Roosevelt for the Spanish American war with the AEF. The provided the outdoorsman with tailors, tent-makers, gunsmiths, and guns. There are a number of guns marked with their logo.

The funny thing is, I knew them (from history) as this high end Cabela's kind of place and imagine my disappointment when I found one at the mall selling teenager clothing trends and not so much as a Swiss Army Knife anywhere.

All though in junior high when he got the Mannlicher (was a long wait as I remember no UPS in those days)as a special order item, I remember that they "arranged for the Zeiss scope which they also sold, to be mounted. I used to go with him to A&F and they had all the double rifles in the world !!!

Nice rifles. Especially the Mannlicher!

I have fond memories of going into Abercrombie and Fitch and drooling over the incredible gear they used to sell. I was young and poor at the time, so all I ever bought was a few books, but what a great store that used to be.

I am glad that I am not the only one to remember the old Abercrombie and Fitch. The store in Houston was outstanding. The only thing we have close to that one is Orvis.

I even have a Abercrombie and Fitch labeled rifle scope.

Those are both well done rifles. I would encourage you to pick up a few boxes of Norma ammunition for your children to shoot out of the rifles when they get them, so they can admire their capability. That, and start reloading so you can shoot them :)
