What brought this on?
It would be interesting to see the French in action. They lost in Vietnam due to lack of resources, not lack of fighting ability. Some of their recent work in Africa (Ivory Coast) I found admirable.
I'm not going to touch Algeria, don't know enough about it.
The French Army in WWI was amazing. Almost any other army in the world that took that kind of punishment would have collapsed. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of casualties in a few weeks. See the Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman.
It's amusing to chuckle at the French but I expect that when they get a little modern experience under their belts we'd find they're pros just like us, the diggers, and the brits. Besides, there's always the Saxons to tease.

i have zero respect for the french military...except the foreign legion which isnt even mostly french

This is a gun forum. Why slag the French? If you want to talk about French military history, this really isn't the place.
If you want to discuss the merits of French weapon design, then by all means go ahead. The French military went through a lot in the 20th century and performed admirably. Leave them alone.

I bet somewhere there is a Frenchman making jokes about how a country with several hundred million people in it, with the world's best armed forces, can't pacify a small middle eastern country. Don't forget if it wasn't for the French we would be British subjects.
