L1A1 sight suggestions.

I just got my scope mount for my L1A1 from Tapco and am looking for suggestions as to what kind of sight to put on it. I had a 4-12x scope on it but it has a large objective lense and I had to mount it very high to clear the hand guards, thus I couldn't get a good sight picture with my cheek welded to the stock(scope was too high). I was thinking of putting a red dot on it what do you all think?

Be very careful in your scope selection, FALs recoil a little differently than other rifles (or at least thats the theory) so they quickly kill the less expensive scopes.

SUIT

Put a nice SUIT on that FAL. The SUIT scope is extremely rugged but most proper for any type of FAL. The Brits made one as did the Israelis. It has a inverted post for a reticle which is designed to uncover your target as you were shooting multiple rounds. Also, that inverted pin is lighted. In addition, there is a cam on the side which will allow you to adjust for out to 600 yards with NATO caliber ammo. So, all in all, you can't go wrong. I love mine and it's not one of the brandy new ones, either. It's seen action or at least some excercise in the field. Here's what mine looks like:

I was thinking about going with a suit, but I know nothing about them. How are they at close range say 50yds. We have pin shoots with the shot up pins from pistol shoots and I use my L1A1 for pin shooting, that's why I was thining reddot. Are suit sights quick to get on target?

Yep, very quick. At 50 yards, they'd be fine. The SUITS have a fixed focus, however, and anything closer might be a tad bit fuzzy but not bad. At 50 yards, everything is perfect. You'd have no problem at all.

You'll need a weaver base for it, too. The scope comes with a proprietary mount that will accept a weaver base. The one I put on my FAL is the b-square one. I don't normally like b-square mounts as I think they're clunky. However, this one slides onto the rifle in place of the regular bolt cover and then screws tightly down against the sides of the receiver body. That think is rock solid. To remove the scope, you simply flip the lever and the scope pops right up. Replacing it keeps perfect zero every time, too.

You'll be happy with it. The FALs recoil is gentle enough so that you can put your eye right into that eyecup without any problems of getting whacked.

It's probably due to the nasty shock of the rat bottoming on the stop when the gas is set too high. Many people complain about FAL recoil but the recoil is actually quite modest. Setting the gas too high accelerates the breech block carrier too fast and all the energy is dumped in an instant as it hits the stop.

Try adjusting the gas down and add a synthetic recoil buffer to soften the thump.
