I've been working up loads, and was about to do some 108 and 123 grain 6.5x55 Lapua Scenars.

But, as I look at Lapua's site, I'm wondering if these bullets are appropriate for deer hunting.

They are hollow point (so they could make a heck of a hole)...but I don't know if the bullet is really designed for the energy transference needed.

Has anyone used these bullets for hunting deer?

The Scenar is primarily a target bullet . The hollow point is there as a manufacturing detail and will not expand as you think. Use the Naturalis or other hunting bullet .

While they and the SMK have been used in hunting roles, it is typically with larger rifles and/or huge velocity cartridges.

The Scenar like the SMK will not fragment or expand as mentioned.

The only time I've seen an SMK fragment was a 7mm driven out of a 7RUM with 94grains of powder... at around 3500fps+

All this said, they can be used if shot placement is taken with great care and the like. They are NOT for the amature or even journeyman hunter!

I shot my deer last year with a 175gr SMK shot out of my .308 with a mere 2700 fps of mv. The animal was standing 325yds away and the MK expanded nicely and blew a 3" exit hole in the opposing ribs. I have no experience with the scenar and as almost the whole nose is hollow on those bullets I they may just fold in and act like a FMJ. Only way to find out is to try it :D .

Maarten
