I'm 99% sure that the 3 hole turret and 4 hole turret can NOT be interchanged, as the machined outer ring is specific to each one......

I am 100% sure you cant.as I have both.and the advance rod is specific to the 3 or 4 hole.why would you try.or do you have threes.

Nope, won't work.
When I ordered my Lee 4 hole turret press I also ordered a 3 hole turret.
I was thinking it would be handy if I wanted to load with a 3-die setup.
Welp, I was wrong. So now I have a turret to use in some future trading deal.

Out of curiosity I transformed my 4 hole Lee Cast Turret to a 3 hole turret by using the parts of my old aluminum base Lee turret. It worked fine. But I then converted it back to its original configuration. Curiosity is a neat form of invention too...
If you use the three posts from the 4 hole you will need to make an adapter for the 3 hole shorter turret rod. If you use the short posts from the 3 hole the only thing I ran across was that the press had a shorter stroke and caused a bit of a problem when seating the bullet.

Do you mean the 3 holes DOES NOT WORK if I bought the 4 holes?
Do you mean they don't align with the ram?
I removed the advance rod because I turn manually the dies and I use only 2 stations. decap/resize on my hard cast then on the turret powder and seat the bullet.

I use mine in manual mode (without the rod) for rifle and only use three of the four holes in the turret. When I load pistol, I use all four holes and the indexing rod.
One thing that confused me, however, (well, one of MANY, but we'll just talk about this one for now) is that the red plastic round cases used to hold turrets with dies installed only really work well with three dies, not four, and even then they stand too tall in the case. It's fine when they're sitting on the shelf anyway, but you'd think they'd make some of the correct size and number of holes. I solved this with a custom base made in my woodshop, but...

Well, this thread certainly demonstrates the benefits of reloader's OCD--that's Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder. Seriously; now a bunch of Lee Turret users know the vagaries of both the standard (old) 3-die / aluminum base turret, its upgrade to a 4-die setup, and the "new" 4-die Classic Cast Turret--
As for those die storage boxes--I end up just using the base for to hold my turrets--but my own gripe is wanting dust covers. Some years ago--probably 15--somebody sold them in SGN; apparently the demand was so low, they never even made it to the Internet--or if they did, or if somebody has a pattern--or patterns--I'd sew some up.

The 4 hole turret press you bought will only except the 4 hole turrets. Since Lee sells an upgrade kit that will allow you to upgrade a 3 hole turret press to a 4 hole turret press it would seem reasonable that they also have a kit to turn a 4 hole turret press into a 3 hole turret press. I do not know this to be true because I've not seen one for sale anywhere. You may have to contact Lee directly.
While your press, as it is without an upgrade kit, will only allow the use 4 hole turrets you can use it with as few as 1 die or as many as 4 dies in your setup. I hope we haven't completely confused you.

Duh. I hate that I didn't think of that, Dave. Now I feel pretty stupid.
I've never seen a 4 to 3 hole coversion kit. You just need to give the 4 an quick extra click if you manually index anyway.
Personally, I use a 3 holer. I don't want that extra roll crimp on the pistol ammo that I reload for autoloaders. Setting the seating die for a bit of taper crimp works very well. I seat my cast bullets with the case mouth barely above the top of the top band and use just a kiss of a crimp to remove any belling from the previous die.
Same is true for my 30 06 since I reload for an auto Garand. I seat my 308 military pull bullets at very near the upper edge of the cannelure and then crimp until I can feel just a hair of the edge of the cartridge mouth when I run my finger along the bullet from the tip. Just enough to headspace.

I still don't understand the problem. If you have a four hole turret, you can use a two die set, a three die set, or a four die set. No biggie. You don't have to have a die in every hole. A three hole turret limits you a little. I see no reason for getting a three hole turret set up any more.

If anyone is interested in what I did to solve the problem with the Lee storage containers so I could place the turret and dies in them and cover them with the original cover. send me your e-mail via PM and I will send you the photos of the small modification...I have never been able to post photos on here...
