DS Grade, heavy use, tight lockup, 2 1/2" chamber. The folded star crimp of a 2 3/4 paper shell when fired in this shorter chamber wll have partially opened into 2 1/2' chamber.

Is it a big no-no to use2 3/4' field grade shotshells in a 2 1/2' chamber?

I have fired a few vintage 2 3/4 shotshells in this 2 1/2' chamber. No apparent problems.

I know of others who do it, but 2.5 shot shells are available so why take chances.

I don't know anything about Lefever shotguns and when yours was made. But I would not fire a shell longer than the chamber is cut for in any firearm. You may never have a problem. Or the next pull of the trigger could split the barrel. That shot column has to start moving when that powder burns but that crimp not opening all the way is going to cause resistance where there shouldn't be any. That can cause a pressure spike. Heres a link to guys who should know about your shotgun.

With the availability of shorty/mini shotshells from Aguila and now Federal there is no reason to use over length shells. Some older shotguns have been opened up to take 2 3/4" shells but you run the risk of having the barrel too thin at the end of the chamber.

Use the proper ammo for the gun - you are seriously spiking pressures in a gun not designed for that. 2-1/2" ammo is available from RST
