Fellow Californian Gun Owners:

Like many of you I was angered by Gov. Schwarzenegger's signing of AB50. For me it was an especially cruel blow as I am a consistent contributor to a variety of Republican organizations. In light of his decision to betray the Second Amendment, I am responding to all requests for donations (save for those from the campaigns of T. McClintock and J. Thune) with the following letter instead of a check. You may wish to do the same.

To Whom It May Concern:

On September 19, 2004 Governor Schwarzenegger singed into law AB 50, a bill banning the sale and possession of .50 caliber weapons in the state of California. Not to put too fine a point on it, this was an act of treason against the Constitution as well as the Republican party. From a Democrat I would expect this sort of betrayal, as treachery is part of their basic craven nature. From a Republican it is completely unacceptable. Like many California Republicans I am a Republican by way of the right to keep and bear arms civil rights movement, not the other way around. The California Republican party has long been a champion of the common man's right to firearms ownership. Based on Governor Schwarzenegger's actions I must assume that this is no longer the case. His reasons for not vetoing this bill are obviously far, far too "nuanced" for a simple rank-and-file Republican like myself to understand.

In the end it seems that all of the Republican Party's talk about getting the government off of our backs, supporting the Second Amendment, facing down California's socialists, and returning to an era of individual responsibility is just that: talk. As you can undoubtably see from the mailing list that you acquired my name from, I have been a consistent if small financial contributor to our party. But because of what Governor Schwarzenegger has done you may remove my name from whatever list you have been provided with because I will not contribute a single red cent to my party or any of its candidates until he is brought into line. Allow me to repeat myself: Governor Schwarzenegger's support of gun control has cost the Republican Party my financial support. Whatever meager funds I possess will be contributed to the National Rifle Association. If you want my financial support you can contact them instead of me, because at this point I trust the NRA more than the Republican Party.

Amen to that SM!
