I have a Rock River M4 flattop and am looking to purchase some optics for it.

Originally I was looking to put a non-magnified EOTech sight on it, but after trying to accurately hit small targets at 100 yards with my current ghost ring iron sights, I now feel that I need some magnification.

So then I started looking more at a Trijicon 4x ACOG scope.

But recently I have come across the Leupold Mark 4 CQ/T scope with 1 - 3x magnification. It seems to me that this gives the best of both worlds -- both eyes open, red (yellow actually) dot sighting for close quarters, PLUS magnification for engaging targets further out.

Has anyone used this scope before? Any positive or negative reviews? I'm having trouble finding anything online.

Thanks in advance.

IMHO - a reasonable even a very good choice for a plinker.

The close quarters dot isn't good enough for serious use with the wrong lighting starting on the wrong foot under extreme time pressure while moving out of a kill zone but OK for playing games including 3 gun competition where the magnification isn't good enough for ultimate target identification at longer ranges but plenty good enough to tell the difference between a shoot/don't shoot target in an IDPA side match.

There's a reason the S&B Short Dot costs what it does and it's because nothing cheaper will do the job nearly so well - again IMHO.

For my money
trying to accurately hit small targets at 100 yards
and using the same rig as a reaction weapon at extreme short ranges can't be done cheaply. But see the "po'boy" combination of optics with a good dot and an acceptable magnification. Otherwise it's go with a pure dot and swap out a scope.
