I picked up an AR lower a few months ago and I am currently waiting for my 20" flat top upper to arrive (hopefully sometime this summer!). I am thinking about optics now and I ran across a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36 scope for ~$350 at cdnn. The rifle will be used 95% of the time for punching paper from 100-300 yards. This scope fits my budget ($400) any opinions and/or alternatives?

The best all around scope in my opinion. That is a great price, Leupold has discontinued the entire VX line and are replacing them with something similar, but more expensive. They won't last long at that price.

That is a good price. If it is going to be 95% punching paper at 100-300 yards you may want to get a higher power scope.

great scope at a great price.

that said, it wouldn't be my choice for an ar build, but if it fits your theme and desires, there's no flies on it.

Super scope. Huge field of view at low power, and high enough magnification for long work, despite the fact that more power does make that easier.

I have one on my bolt action .308.
