Looking at the hodgen load charts for 124 gr and 125 gr pills.
Would like to get as close to factory feel as possible for plinking. The powder i have:
Titegroup, Hs6, Wst, autocomp, universal.
Do i follow the lead (lcn) chart? I had thought these are plated, or can i follow the Fmj chart. The Hdy, Hap loads seem pretty light and low velocity.

So my question is do i just follow the Lcn chart?

thanks

Are you looking to get the 1150 fps velocity as a Federal 124 gr. HST round gets? Best go with HS-6, IMO. But jwrowland77 referred to. What type bullets will you be loading? That will be the deciding factor of if you can get the same feel as the factory. Again, my opinion.

I've read the "mid jacketed levels" (the bullet manufacturers recommendation for max) and "use jacketed data", but I have always used lead bullet load data. I have read though, of upper jacketed velocities/pressures damaging some plated bullets (stripping plating).

If I want "jacketed bullet velocities", I'll use jacketed bullets. I cast my own bullets so I don't need "cheap" bullets and after I shot up my initial purchases of plated bullets (1200) I found I have no use/need for them...

Work the loads up from Start!!

dkonrai, here is what I have:

From Lyman's Third Ed. Pistol & Revolver'
125 gr. Sierra JHP (.554") 1.075" COAL.

HS-6 start load is 5.8 gr. for a 949 fps. and max is 6.6 gr. for 1080 fps. (30,400 C.U.P.)

Titegroup start load is 3.8 gr. for a 962 fps. and max is 4.2 gr. for a 1045 fps. (31,200 C.U.P.)

Universal start load is 4.0 gr. for a 880 fps. and max is 4.5 gr. for a 1042 fps. (29,300 C.U.P.)

Sierra, though they don't list pressures, shows the same bullet, HS-6 max (6.6 gr.) powder charge, and COAL at 1150 fps.

So with the case length being .750", the Sierra bullet length .554", and the cartridge being 1.075". That would put the seating depth at .229". That should give you a starting point.

Or...

You could go with Hodgdon's data for Sierra FMJ, which should be .581" in length. Using their COAL, 1.090", the seating depth would be .241".

This is where, you wanting a factory like load but not the exact load data, a chrony would be nice. :)

Wow thank you for that intel. Guess i will play with the oal. Press is set up at 1.125 and will adjust shorter oal. Most confusing. I measured some factory and it was 1.125?

This is the velocity data on the back of a box of 124gr Federal HST standard pressure rounds that shows 1,150 fps at the muzzle. Duplicate this muzzle velocity to get a duplicate of the HST loading for standard pressure.

Your best bet is going to be HS6 and Universal. Personally I'd use Sierra data for their 125gr and 130gr bullets though 1,150 fps will be at their maximum loading. Its been my experience that the Sierra loads produce the listed velocities when fired over the chrono or within what would be expected using a different gun.

The PDF below Shows Sierra's data from a fairly recent One Book/One Caliber compiled load data book.

5-5.2 gr of Automomp is a nice soft shooting load when pushing a 124 gr pill. My OAL is 1.135. Cycles in all three of my 9mm's.

I have never used HS6 but from what you listed Autocomp and HS6 (slower 9mm powders)would probably be your best bet.
I like Universal but most of my Universal loads are midrange.
I have found that Autocomp is well behaved at Hodgdons listed MAX charges.
People use Autocomp for 9mm Major so I would guess it is not spikey at the high end.

NOTE: I am not recomending 9mm MAJOR charge levels.

Not matter what you use be safe and work to max loads.
Use Jacketed data as Walkalong mentioned.

Nice looking Bullets:)

Was the 1150 vel on the box for regular pressure or +P?

Think i need a little more crimp. A bit of the top still catches a bit. Fits fine in the barrel.
Yeah, a light taper crimp will close the case mouth very nicely. I use a Lee 9mm set. I only seat the bullet with the bullet seater. I use the Lee factory crimp die to finish them off. Nice soft shooting practice load.
