I picked up a beautiful rifle chambered in 7mm Sharp and Hart which looks like it is a belted mag slightly shorter than a 7mm Magnum. Anyone have load data for this cartridge. Seems to be one that the loading manuals ignore.

Took pics of my Hornady #2 manual, last printing 1979. The powders are IMR unless otherwise noted with the H or N.
You'll need to work up because powders may have changed over the last 30 years. I noticed Midway has Norma brass available yet for it.

The 7x61 Sharpe and Hart was pretty much designed around IMR 4350 powder and was a good performer at the time. It was overshadowed by the 7mm Remington Magnum and they tried to catch up with the Super 7x61 S&H with thinner (but harder) brass for a little more case capacity in the same chamber. Didn't really keep the caliber in the market, but it does matter which brass you have.

Thanks. Gives me a start. I will check out the Midway brass. Was thinking of forming brass by trimming 7mm Mag brass and running it through a 7x61 die I got off of eBay. Thinking of using fairly heavy bullets, 165 or 175, for elk hunting.

grsjax, I wouldn't wait too long on the available brass from Midwayusa. Norma does not show it on their current list of brass being available. Forming brass can be a PITA sometimes. I would grab all I could for now. I think it was around $23 for 20, which I think is reasonable for Norma brass.

Picked up a set of Pacific 7x61 Super reloading dies, a complete set of RCBS form and trim dies and a sack full of 7mm Mag brass for less than a set of Lee 7mm Mag dies on sale would have cost me. This will be my first attempt at forming brass so I have a couple of questions. What sort of lube should I use in the forming dies? Should I fire form the reformed brass with a light load before using full loads?

You need a good lube for case forming, the sprays won't cut it. I have seen this and that recommended and maybe somebody will be along with other ideas, but the only thing I have used for reforming and full length sizing is Imperial:

Be extremely careful with 7x61 ammo loaded in resized 7mm R.M. It might lead to some excitement if it got into a rifle matching the headstamp instead of the shape.

Also heard from some guys that the RCBS dies are not the greatest for this cartridge, or that the resizer ball has to be slightly downsized (or put a little lube on the inside of the neck if you dont want to reduce the ball size). IF you can find them Lyman dies work well...
I have RCBS dies that I have not yet tried as I still have 40 rounds or so of new ammo but i will be trying these RCBS before I look forever for Lyman.

I have Hornady and Sierras latest manual with the Sharpe & Hart in it...I used to have a rifle chambered in that round myself...but thats been a while back.

I have data all over the place for the 7x61. Smoked alot of game with the 154 Hornady. Really wish I had that rifle back. When brass became scarce I formed it out of 300 H@H.

The RCBS dies I bought didn't have instructions. Should I treat them like FL sizing dies, that is screw them into the press to the point where they just contact the shell holder then back them off 1/2 a turn?

Success
Managed to form some brass this weekend. Messed up a few cases but on the whole not bad.
The first on the left is a 7mm Rem Mag followed left to right by the results of the first form die, second form die and finally the finished cartridge run through a FL die and trimmed to lenght.

One last question. should I anneal the brass before I load it for the first time?

My question first is did you try the brass in the chamber and close the bolt? You probably will need to fire form to your chamber for best fit.
If you know how to properly anneal the brass, I see no reason not to do it. You probably work hardened the brass to some degree, running it through the forming dies. If you anneal, then I would run it back through the FL dies again to make sure no warping occurred in the neck.
You did a good job, so keep us posted with your progress.
