Afternoon from a wet NE England, UK, to Everyone.
Here in the Uk it has become increasingly difficult to obtain Jacketted bullets (heads !!). Have decided to try reloading my 7x57 Mauser with hard Cast Lead, gas checked bullets.
Slight problem. The company producing hard cast lead bullets here in the UK only casts a 168 grain bullet in 7mm. The Lyman #4 book lists a max bullet weight of 160.
My question to the forum members. Does anyone have any proven data for this calibre/bullet weight or suggest where i can find the data.
An added problem is powder availabilty. here in the Uk Ramshot powders & Vihtavuori powders are readily available but not so available are Hodgdon, IMR etc.

Would appreciate any information members can give me.

Thanks
Regards

Don’t have any knowledge of this but wanted to say hello.

I would go to the Hodgdon website and request data for that particular bullet. They probably have tested some that weight but did not publish the data due to wanting to sell other propellants that are directly a Hodgdon product. Also explain you can only readily get Ramshot propellant. They have worked well with my odd requestsin the past. Also go to the VV website and request data for the same. They should help as well.

Is this just for plinking, competition or hunting? If you look at vhit load data it appears the start load of n150 is reduced by roughly 1 grain of powder for 10 grains of bullet weight. So if 160 has a start load of 38.6 and your going up to a 168 I'd start at 37.6 and test a few. I might even go 37.0 37.3 37.6 and a few more. You could also download grt or buy quickloads and see. If you have any red dot you may want to Google and read the article called the load. N120, 4198, reloader 7 are kinda close in burn rate and may be worth playing with in those programs as they are good powders for cast and I believe they would perform much better... see if grt says n120 with your 168 says 22 grains is a good start load... the velosity will be 1600fps ish and would likely be worked up to a good load.
