Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Looking forward to your impressions of it. Did you determine where it falls in burn rate?

If I can believe the Hodgdon online data, it looks to be slightly slower than H-4350 in the Dasher case.

I ran 25 plus charges of Precision Rifle StaBALL 6.5 through my BR-30 measure on my LNL (It's set up to drop automatically), running the cases through, and then started weighing charges, pulling each case as it came to station 5, weighing the charge, then putting the case back into rotation.

After throwing a bunch to settle the measure down, I weighed the next 15 charges. (42.0 on the BR-30)( 31.0 +/- of RL-15 was 39.0 on BR-30)

The powder was right at the base of the shoulder.

Pretty good for just dropping the charges on the LNL. After I shoot the rounds tomorrow I will pick a charge and load a few up to chrono one thrown weight. If I was throwing charges for match ammo I would mount the BR-30 on a stand and drop charges into cases in a load block operating the measure by hand instead of running them through the LNL. That's what I will do when I pick a charge weight to try.

A friend and I packed up a bunch of guns and gear, and headed down to the North Springs range near Price, UT for some long range practice. If you follow the Long Range Shooters of Utah channel on youtube, you will see this range in their videos.

The small targets, on the left side of the spotting scope image taken at 1000 yards, are steel "milk jugs" meant to simulate the targets they use in the milk jug challenge.

The 6x47L did great on the milk jugs , and it I was able to connect on the silhouette with the 223 and 6x47L.

They have some steel plates, which look to be 14x14", placed between 200 and 600 yards. With my old ML2 4MOA Aimpoint on a 16" AR, 90% hits were possible out to 400, beyond that it got a little tricky trying to figure out holdovers.

@taliv- My guess would be that it would flow really nice through the Dillon. I have loaded 223 with TAC, which is a ball powder, using a Dillon measure and it worked really well.

I still trickle RL16 charges using an RCBS Chargemaster but for 223, I throw 8208 charges using a Lee Deluxe Perfect Powder Measure. If I keep the Lee between 3/4 and near full, it will throw +/- .1 grains. I refill the measure every 10 rounds.

i don't suppose you have a dillon powder measure to try it in?
No. A Redding BR-30, Redding 10X, Hornady measure that came with the LNL. Had a Niel Jones a long time ago, but it did no better than the BR-30 and I sold it.

TAC is a much finer flattened ball powder than the new Winchester Precision Rifle StaBALL 6.5 flattened ball powder.

I shot the ten rounds after work today. In a hurry not to lose the sun.

N-140
31.0=2879
31.5=2917
32.0=2949
32.5=2982
33.0=3023

PR 6.5
35.0=2783
35.5=2783 (Did I load 35.0 Again? Sure looks like it)
36.0=2824
36.5=2911
37.0=2936

78 Degrees, 30% RH, Sunny, very little wind.

Primers looked good, top velocity loads showed a hair more flat in the middle but lots of round still left on the edges.

Lots of glare today and I did not note which shots landed where.

I shot two of the RL-15 loads I have loaded up for the match to warm up the barrel (Bottom Middle)

Then I shot the N-140 rounds on the top left and then the PR 6.5 rounds on the top right target.

Part of my notes in my log from last night. We're pretty close.

I had 15 cases left from the 300 fire formed 6 BR cases. All the others have been loaded once more and shot in a match or as a test round. So I loaded up 7 with 31.7 Grs of N-140, hand weighed charges.

Then I switched over to the Win PR StaBALL 6.5. I did not hand weigh these charges, but instead used the BR-30 on the LNL.

I ran a LOT of cases through the LNL weighing each powder charge, moving the handle smoothly and letting it bump ever so lightly at the bottom of the stroke, which would lightly jostle the powder in the measure. A LOT!

I ended up at 42.7 on the BR-30 where I thought the average would be pretty close to 36.7 Grs of PR 6.5, so I ran another ten charges through it weighing each one.

I got 36.56, 36.68, 36.54, 36.72, 36.66, 36.80, 36.72, 36.78, 36.66, & 36.78 for an Avg 36.69 Grs.

Then I threw 7 more charges and used them to charge 7 cases.

36.78, 36.86, 36.64, 36.72, 36.68, 36.70, & 336.76 for an Avg 36.734 Grs

I also loaded one round with 32.0 grs of RL-15, which is what I have been shooting in the matches and have loaded up for the Altus shoot in Dec. If I had known they were going to postpone the match from Oct, I would have tested 32.3 Grs of RL-15 prior to loading and would have used that instead this time.

I go off call Monday at 7:00 AM and will look for a nice afternoon to shoot these after work next week.

Nearly ten years ago I modified my Redding 10X & BR-30 measures to drop automatically on the LNL. Works real well. Now a days you can just add the RCBS or Hornady linkage and use it in any station on the LNL

me too. as i mentioned earlier i have everything needed to convert my 1050 to 6dasher, but i was only going to process brass not drop powder and seat bullets. but if that powder works, i might try it.

I’m thinking about going full-on fanboi and testing 110 A-tips over Sta-ball next month after deer season before I spin off this barrel. I hate using barrel life in 6 creed just for experimenting, but this tube has enough life to try a few things, but not enough left to leave it on for any part of next season. Just enough time to play a little bit.

I would love to see those results, as I want to try PR 6.5 in 6 Creed as well when the MPA rifle gets here. If 6 GT had been offered in the "Competition Ready" rifle, I would have gotten it in that. 6 Creed is just fine though to start.

let me know how it goes cause that's exactly what i want to do

@Walkalong & @taliv - I’ll share my results once I get through deer season. I’m a little reticent right now, as I’m not sure how valid the results will really be with so many rounds on the barrel. But I expect it’ll still be plenty telling.
