Okay gang, I'm back at looking for a lightweight small, compact CC pistol. Right now I'm carrying my Wilson Combat CQB Compact, and it's fine during the colder months or when I'm wearing sturdier clothing (i.e. jeans), but it's far from ideal for my office attire (dress slacks or suit) where the belt loops are such that use of a proper belt to support the weight of an all steel pistol just isn't possible. I'd like to find something slim like the 1911, but a good measure lighter.

Here's a quick rundown of things I've tried:

Glock 23 Gen. 3 (twice) - weight and physical size were okay, I just don't care for how the Glock feels in my hand. It feels too big for my hand with it's square profile and finger grooves that slightly force my fingers apart.

Glock 26 Gen. 4 - good weight and physical size, but still feels a little uncomfortable in my hand for the same reason as the 23 above. The pinky was a non issue because I used Pierce extensions to give me somewhere to put my finger

Springfield XD 9 Sub Compact - Just felt unnecessarily top heavy. Would have been a perfect option had it had a slide profile that was more like the Glock or S&W M&(.

S&W M&P 9C - Overall good physical size and weight, but didn't care for the trigger. Mine felt mushy and did not have a very tactile reset.

HK USP Compact - Really liked how the gun felt in my hand and how it shot, but just felt a little too bulky for CC. Seemed to nearly have the same bulk feeling of a 1911

HK P2000 LEM - Loved everything about it except the trigger. I also tried one of these in DA/SA and like it just fine except for the rear mounted decocking button.

Presently, I'm thinking of trying a P30SK, M&P 9 Shield, Glock 43, Walther CCP, and Springfield XD-S.

Anyone have some thoughts on what to try? My local rental range lacks any of the above for testing before buying.

A couple of quick points:
Beltman makes a gun belt that is 1.25" wide which works with suits/dress pants.

On the M&P 9c, I think Apex makes both a new trigger group (or the necessary parts) and a separate reset assist, both of which are supposed to be a good improvement on the stock trigger. Those might be worth a look.

If you're interested in a new gun, I'd look at the Shield. The Glock 43 is good but is a little short on the blackstrap for me. If you like a good trigger and tactile reset, avoid the Walther CCP.

A Springfield XDs in 9mm or 45 would be a good single stack option.

I find that mine points similar to my 1911s, and is more than light enough to go unnoticed even in kakis and a dress belt.

Personally I would rule out the Walther CCP as way too many reliability problems reported by owners.

The Walther PPS however is tried and true and there is a new M2 version of the PPS that just came out with a redesigned grip and button magazine release. IMO both would be worth checking out. I CCW the original PPS frequently.

Thanks for the feedback. I no longer have the M&P 9C, so I'd either have to re-buy with the new trigger parts and have them installed, or simply go with the PPS.

I forgot to ask, am I correct in my observation/assumption that the slide on the XD-S appears to be trimmed down a bit from the original XD?

I believe so. The XDs is only 1" thick at its widest point. I've been carrying one for over 3 years now and it carries really nicely in a IWB holster.

I recently handled a P30SK, and also really like it, though it is thicker than an XDs. It had a LEM trigger, which I did really like, but they can be had without that option if it isn't your thing.

I'm seriously considering buying a P30SK as an alternate carry gun as I liked it that much. My HK45 and VP9 inspired me a bit.

i have a bersa thunder 45 UC pro, basically its the same length, height, and width as a .380 subcompact with the same7 7+1 magazine capacity, but its 45acp

I back pocket carry a P3AT with a Armalaser TR-1 in a pocket holster. It's extremely lightweight and flat. It's a compromise but I figure it's fairly safe in the office.

Yeah - the Shield is pretty nice. It is light enough that I can use the NIC holster.

I carry a g43 with a remora holster. Sold my sig p938 and my xds 45. I find the g43 extremely comfortable to carry, and reliable. But I also keep a g30s in my backpack with a lcr 357. So basically my g43 would be my back up Gun to get to my backpack guns.

I would consider a S&W Shield, an SA XDs, and a SIG P938 to be all viable options for a smaller, more compact 9mm. for CCW.

I really like my XDs. I can wear it all day and not think about it and it's an enjoyable gun to shoot at the range(and i think everyone should spend plenty of range time with their carry weapon).

I havent owned the Shield, but to hear others talk, I'd say its a great option as well. I have buddy who loves his.

Then you have to give a SIG 938 a close look. Don't think you'll be dis-appointed.
